The PS4 should perform about as well as a reference 7850 (860MHz and 1024 cores vs 800MHz and 1152 cores) and the Xbone is an R7 260 or 360 with, like, a quarter the memory bandwidth.

The XBO and PS4 don't use Pitcairn and Bonaire; there are some similarities (same number of CUs, for example), but they're different GPUs. The XBO's iGP has SRAM, which none of the other GCN implementations support, and I think the CUs are arranged/packed a bit differently as well. The PS4 iGP has quite a few modifications to the architecture that never made it back into a desktop chip, and it also IIRC has more ACEs than Pitcairn.

sounds like a mega drive cd thing, this is gona be a waste of time they should be working on a 4k console not an upgrade for 1080p 30fps, the cpu is old, the gpu is old and need a refresh. where are the dx12 consoles with hdmi 2.1a, 120hz 1080p and 30fps 4k +vr?!?

I've been saying this ever since we heard about the move to x86. It's a good concept but we'll see if MS can't pull it off without insulting or alienating their customers.

wondering how this is going to work headscratch.gif

PC and Xbox moving closer together is a good thing though. I hope they give us more freedom with the windows store though!

Maybe it has something to do with hololens?

Im guessing an external GPU for SLI, the reason i say this is because of how close this announcment and AMD eGPU one are time wise.

That is an interesting connection. I think you may be right about it smile.gif

In this case it wouldn't be SLI since its an AMD chip. AMD uses Crossfire. Interesting thing nonetheless. If this is true, we would need actual connectors, access to said connectors without voiding warranties. This seems pretty promising.

If you run twice the chips, you're going to need twice the memory (these chips function basically like an APU, and share system RAM with CPU). Which means that theoretically, memory should be expandable as well. CPUs should be upgraded as well to prevent graphics bottlenecks. At this point we're basically looking at Steam machines.

IMO this is a stupid concept and pretty much defeats the entire purpose of consoles. The ONLY thing that consoles have over pc is you cough up the money once and thats it, you have years of guaranteed compatibility with any game you will get, no stuffing around. Now why bother, just get a PC.

I don't know enough about it so this is a poorly formed thought but is it possible they could use HSA and a dedicated GPU chip with its own VRAM?

Edit: Assuming an external GPU is even what MS is talking about given that Phil is always vague and what he said could mean any number of things.

If i were microsoft, i would instead focus on a Gaming OS/Xbox OS so we can then install onto a computer and run xbox games and / or a windows app with a product key/tied to xbox live so then you can run xbox games on your computer.
