[Various] It sounds like Xbox One will get hardware upgrades - Page 6

All they can do is release a pro system that can use aftermarket gpus. They said they were going to release a new xbox sku.

So consoles are now shifting more and more into becoming SFF PC's?...the only thing differentiating them now is the OS, and I suppose the better optimization they currently enjoy (Hopefully dev's negate this with with DX12 and Vulkan on PC).

It seems to me like the line between PC and console is slowly but surely blurring, and I am looking forward to this.

Im just saying or whishing
PS3 could do this, though I don't think any devs besides Polyphony took advantage of it.

I don't see 4k even @ 30fps happening, PCs are just getting comfortable with those settings, though I'd love if it did happen... Gran Turismo @ 1080p 120hz biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

M$ confirms upgrade path for xbone. We know Sony will match or try to top. Even with a comfortable lead in player-base, it doesnt seem right for them to just sit there and not respond. PS4 owners wlll also voice upgrade options. Bloodborne @ 60fps aint such a dream right now.

OMG... read the article, there aren't upgrades for the Xbox One. They're talking about allowing you to use an "Xbox OS" on a device you build yourself or order built that can be upgraded: mainboard/cpu/ram etc.

Basically a specialty PC line

Crudely speaking? Nope, that's exactly right. thumb.gif AMD reused Pitcairn and Bonaire for the PS4 and Xbone, respectively, and disabled two compute units on each. The PS4 should perform about as well as a reference 7850 (860MHz and 1024 cores vs 800MHz and 1152 cores) and the Xbone is an R7 260 or 360 with, like, a quarter the memory bandwidth.

It would be interesting to see how this plays out. This kind of halfway upgrade isn't completely new. Nintendo released the GameBoy Color, and with a few exceptions, GBC games could be played on the original GameBoy. And now, like 15 years later, they have the New 3DS with extra memory and moar coars. I'm not aware of any New 3DS exclusive games, but it's certainly a bit more powerful.

wow given the static setup both have now with some software optimization as most all consoles get over the the years the PS4 ought to have a little life left in it if they can pull of the graphics on it like they did with some of the last PS3 games.

Also if console makers wanna go this route it would help to not tie game code to clock speed. look at the original xbox when the CPU was upgraded or dolphin when the vCPU is vOCed. al though if they can clock down the newer CPUs to the speed of the previous version that might fix that problem.

A console that's upgrade-able would be something that's interesting and great to see!

So, the "issue" with consoles has always been graphics-based...In that, within 1-2 generations, the GPU's are already obsolete. The CPU's however, remain relevant, compared to the entire market, for 5-6 years.

The benefits to the console for developers, is optimization. They only have to optimize for 1 setting thus, games come out faster, they're typically "better" than PC ports, so on and so forth...Most developers actually prefer developing for the consoles comparative to optimizing for the thousands of PC variations...

It's actually feasible that if, M$ wanted to, they could have AMD engineer stronger GPU's that follow the same base parameters and keep developers at a 1x1 setting thereby keeping //all// the benefits of a console while allowing the end user to upgrade the GPU as they will.

TLDR: A console with an upgraded GPU would be the best of both worlds.

Don't forget that if this is done right - It could also, eventually, be a threat to PC's in that, it's essentially already, a pc.

wasn't segas add-on scheme an indication that this might be a bad idea?

seriously, it's like MS is saying our console is already obselete.

add-ons are like life support.

add-ons are like life support.

When Sega did their add-on scheme, technology wasn't going obsolete within 4 quarters, now it is - Especially with Pascal.

The real problem is that consoles are becoming obsolete by the time they ship but, they offer an incredible benefit to developers in that, optimization is incredibly simple.

By keeping optimization incredibly simple and offering the consumer, the ability to upgrade the GPU - It's no longer life support, it actually becomes more of a "PC" than anything but, developers will still favor the platform.

So, this actually has the potential to make the XBOne relevant again comparative to the Sega which existed at a time when a lot of people had dial-up.
