[SPONSORED] [Scratch Build] Protocol_1337 - FrozenQ

Pending move to sponsored section.

Because we love being bored with a build after a year, and having a serious addiction to modding, we bring you "Protocol 1337". A collaboration build between myself and my brother. Throughout the build, I'll be responsible for the physical case design and doing the actual build, and Dan is my designer, so he'll be designing all the artwork and aesthetic elements.

Before I begin, I want to thank my continued sponsors for being absolutely awesome. Without them, our builds would be barely possible!

A little bit about the build.

Started to actually work on this yet? What concepts were used to get Intel and Antec on board?

I'm about to post a lot more, just got the initial post up.

We have done many many builds before with the help of Intel, Antec, nVidia, Gigabyte, Corsair, etc. Most of these just go to shows, but I'm trying to start doing more build logs where I can!

Awesome, so this must be something to look forward to then. I've never really followed a scratch build so definitely staying subscribed. thumb.gif

So this is pretty much the initial concept. I drew up a chassis in our 3d software, and Dan took the side panel and threw together a rough design concept in Photoshop.

The above picture shows the back part of the side panel. So we wanted the top/back/front of the case to have an aqua blue "pin stripe", so basically we just cut the edge in blue, and then inset the large clear panel for the window.

Now the back panel (behind motherboard) is just going to be covered in carbon fiber vinyl, so that there is no light transmission.

The front panel will not have this, but rather have the window portion to look into the case.

Picture of the completed back panel. We adhered the matte black piece to the aqua blue ring/clear panel combo, and then proceeded to inset the blue, orange, and white pieces into the slots.

Picture of the completed front panel. We didn't like how text turned out as well as how there were some gaps between the inset pieces. So I'll be redoing this today.

Back to work we go...

I took a micro ATX I/O bracket that I purchased from Mountain Mods, chopped off the bottom on the band saw and cleaned up the edge a bit. Works perfect for miniITX builds. I recommend getting these if you ever do a scratch build. The threaded inserts that are stamped in make mounting a breeze.

One of the side frames post cutting with all the holes tapped or fitted with brass inserts.

Both frame pieces attached to the front panel where the radiator will eventually go.

Back panel and one side panel test fitted. In this picture you can see how most of the case is assembled. We printed a bunch of transparent blue cubes on the 3D printer and punched in some brass inserts.

Shot of the back side.

Now came the tricky part. You can see here we secured the bottom panel into the case, but they panel isn't bent yet. Instead of coming up with some sort of jig to bend that at the right angle, I decided it would just be a heck of a lot easier if I secured it down, and then did the bending while it was attached the case. So essentially, panel was attached, case was laid upside down over the heating element, and then I hand formed the panel to fit flush against the side brackets.

This is a shot of the top panel, and you can see how those bends came out nice and even. If I get a chance I'll post some more pictures of my bending setup and how I go about that. You can also see here where the SSD is going to go.

Shot from the side with the motherboard tray mounted.

Test fitting of the left side panel. She's coming together quite well!

We're working with 2 Intel 730 series SSD's for this build, and I've made a simple little mount to secure to the top of the case, so the design of the SSD shows through the top window.

Final results after getting that mounted up top, came out looking a lot better than I had expected.

Here you can see the drive mount from the inside. I flipped the other SSD upside down so you can see the "nice" side of the SSD from both angles.

Another shot of the top, here you can where I added the power switch, and also a small FQ tag.

BEGIN THE HARDLINE! Also known as, begin the long and arduous journey of swearing at things. Stuff is time consuming, and frustrating at times, but it certainly pays off. The look just can't be beat.

Experience definitely helps when it comes to hardline, so I would suggest anyone interested in trying it, pick up some extra tubing, and practice first. My first build took 7 hours, the second took 4, and this one took just under 2 to do the hardline. I also can't stress enough how much it helps to clamp or secure your mandrels down to a flat surface. It made this whole process go a heck of a lot easier.

Starting to fill for preliminary leak testing.

Close up of how I did the reservoir. Honestly, I was going to make some mounts to secure this to the radiator, but it turned out really nice just floating there. I was worried about how stable it would be, but this thing is on there like a rock. Stuck one of my mandrels under the pump to support it while we make a riser to hold that up properly.

Getting a proper cable comb on those 6 pin PCI power cables.

System is primed and ready!

Just a little bit to go and we're ready for final pictures.
