Gigabyte's GA-990FX-Gaming

Thread Starter
So. I got this motherboard. It's the most excited I've been about a piece of hardware since Slot A. The GA-990FX-GAMING!!! And boy is it sweet.

What more could you want?!?!?!? PCI-E 3.0 is all hype... Right?!

I've been overclocking ever since I picked up my first "MaximumPC" magazine.

I feel like such a newb because I've been out of the loop so long that 8350s sound like a great piece of hardware. Or is it that Intel has been doing almost as much nothing for as long as AMD?!?! I guess Intel has the whole DDR4 and PCIE 3.0 thing going for them, but that means nothing to me right now.

I JUST got my first 250GB SSD and this mobo in the mail not too long ago.... In my excitement I ripped my old comp to shreds, no looking int my old BIOS settings or anything to preserve my old CPU's overclock.

My life started in 1987 with Nintendo, followed by a Tandy 1000. Then Pentium Pro 180Mhz @ 200Mhz, Gateway 2000, my first REAL PC and overclock. Then Athlon K6-2 300Mhz Compaq--worst computer ever. Then Athlon XP 2600+ from Milwaukee PC--such a beast with it's 256MB RAM-I upgraded the Athlon XP system to 768MB ram, life was great!! I decided to get an X800 Pro, to replace the Geforce2 MX that I overclocked to death in ten minutes one day. My god... do you know what upgrading from a Geforce MX 64MB to a X800 PRO 256MB will do to a person?! Then, MSI's K9MMV.... Try living your life attached to that motherboard for more than a year! I don't think there was a better budget system EVER than the K9MMV plus Athlon X2 4800+ plus an x800 video card. I could be wrong here, I have been known to be.... That's my PC experience in a nutshell, minus the hundred or so that I've built for friends and family over the years.

Anyways. I got this new board, and I'm having trouble unlocking my old chip to a quad core. Something that I've had done for the last 4-5 years @ 3800Mhz.

It's gotten so bad that I've started over with overclocking. The only thing I've touched so far (this time around) is the NB frequency. I've actually got it set at 270Mhz--which boggles my mind. The highest I've ever gotten before is 230Mhz.

Anyways, I'm really excited about this motherboard. It makes me think that AMD is going to pull a Brisbane out of their hat. WILL THERE BE A 14nm FX CHIP!? Not that Brisbane was all that great, but, it was cool and it was a kind offering from AMD before they switched to Phenom 1 chips *shudders*.......

I love AMD with all my heart and soul! I'm a fan though, not a fanboy.... I'll talk **** about them at my first chance!

I would consider myself somewhat noobish, maybe, when it comes to overclocking, I've only ever really had a tier or two above stock cooling, so I never went too crazy...

So this is an overclocking forum. Tell me where to go now with my 270Mhz FSB and this Phenom II X2. It has complete IntelBurnTest's standard test @ 45C.but that's only at 3.2Ghz.

Some of you guys may be members of techpowerup.com's forums, my name in there is Basard as well. Hi, and welcome myself to the forum for everybody so they don't have to type it! thumb.gif

EDIT: Holy crap, that was cringeworthy, I really must have had a few that day... Got rid of the gibberish. I can do that right? Sorry guys ... Man I cant believe any of you even responded to that nonsense.

Err, why is the 8350 listed at $899? It's currently $150 at Newegg.

Well, ultimately I'll be getting an 8350. But that's in two or three weeks. I actually just built a system for a cousin-in-law with one of them in it, now I'm the green-eyed monster.

Until then, I'm planning on running the CPU up to 12Ghz.....biggrin.gif
