Stepping down from my desktop to my laptop in Korea so I'll have some time to dive back into this.
I played xenoblade and it was a hell of a lot of fun, I think I lost the save so I'll I have to start it over, plus stepping down from UHD textures and 4k resolution will be a hard pill to swallow.
Might have to look into the sRPG genre
Awesome. I can help you out.
Romance subplot, the biggest one that comes to mind is Final Fantasy 8... but I can't really recommend it...my least favorite of the classic series next to 2j (Famicom...) If you really want to play it, use epsxe. I can't think of many RPGs with romance plots, sounds more like you need to play a dating sim/visual novel..
Xenoblade Wii I assume... glad you liked it. I told you it was fantastic. The Wii U sequel is even better since you get to pilot transforming mecha and fly around in them and fight in them. Less focus on story and more on exploration. If you liked Xenoblade a lot, then I would URGE you to get a Wii U to play Xenoblade Chronicles X, even if you sell it afterward or something. Or find a used one.
SRPGs... Tactics Ogre on PSX if you haven't played it. It was made by the same team that made Final Fantasy Tactics. Amazing gameplay, story and music.
Front Mission for SNES is great if you like heavy war SRPGs- it's the "real mecha" genre and all combat is done with mecha. Think something like Armored Core style. There's a fan translation patch for this one. The patched rom shouldn't be hard to find. Alternatively, it was on DS as well and if your laptop is decent then no$gba emulates DS.
I have to mention Shining Force... Shining Force, Shining Force II, (Genesis) Shining Force CD (Sega CD), Shining Force Sword of Hayja (Game Gear... despite being on an 8-bit handheld it's still really good). Shining Force III on Saturn has fan patches for all three scenarios. I still need to go through them sometime on my Saturn.
Bahamut Lagoon for SNES is excellent, another fan translated one. Kind of a hybrid between Shining Force and Final Fantasy. Battles take place from an overhead view when moving units but then change to a side view with an FF-like setup when you attack something. You also get to feed and raise dragons that help you in battle, it has a very in-depth Pokemon style dragon minigame.
Again with the Saturn... I hope your laptop is good and could run SSF. Dragon Force, and the recently completed Dragon Force II fan patch (I'm in the credits in the text file; I was a beta tester and found some bugs). http://verve-fanworks.com/
All I can say is to watch videos of these games to see how unique they are, there's really no other strategy RPGs like it.
Hope that's enough. If you want me to explain any of the games I mentioned further, let me know. Unfortunately I can't think of many RPGs with a romance plot
