Hard Drive Having issues

Thread Starter
I have a 1TB WD My Passport and it was working well till last week. I gave my HDD to my friend with some data needed for him, after a week he returned the drive and from then I'm having issues. I asked my friend and he said it worked fine while he was using it. The problem is it loads too slow basically it takes a min (like in the old days when the pc used to detect a pen drive). I tried disconnecting it and connecting it back a lot of times still no use. Today when i connected it windows gave a prompt "unrecognized hardware detected". I just tried again and it worked well for 20 min during which i was able to take a backup. I don't know whats causing it or how to proceed. I ran Western digital data lifeguard diagnostics but even the quick test takes more than 1 hr so i aborted it. My task manager shows it always at 100% disk usage and read speed is around 5MB/s. Any thoughts, suggestions, please, Thank you.

Just a guess but if its always at 100% disc usage something is running on it all the time, maybe a program or something. To me sounds like its prob got malware or a virus thats usually the cause of a disc running at 100%. Id start with a full scan on the drive worth a shot.

No, i scanned thoroughly and using avast and malware-bytes and no sign of virus or malware. to be doubly sure i formatted drive after scanning but the problems persists.

Any noise? Try also some chdsk on that drive. And, if you have one, try with another usb cable. My externa hdd once was giving me issue. I've replaced the usb cord and worked without any issue. I know that is strange but since usb cable are pretty common is worth to try

No noise, I think you maybe right since my HDD works well at occasions but i will have to wait 2 days for a new cable. Also I already ran all disk checks even the one from WD, seems no problem only one time the test just got stuck-up for a long time and I have to abort it.

Hi @PirateZ!

I'm sorry to hear that. frown.gif The fact that the DLG test took that much time is not a good sign, but it's a great thing that you've managed to backup your data from the external.

Try to connect it with a different USB cable and rerun the test - hopefully it will help and the issue will be related to the cable. Also, I'd suggest the extended test instead of a quick one because during it the software will try to fix any errors it finds automatically.

Let us know how it went and upload some screenshots if possible so I can take a look at the results. smile.gif

I suspect his drive was failing based on what was going on.

My drive was dead in few days after the problems started happening and had to replace it. If your's is still working, better make a backup. Even if it gets interrupted, try again.
