Portable Conundrum

Thread Starter
Hello. I’ve been reading these forums for a while now trying to come to terms with a build I would like/need to do. I have some particular needs though.

1. It needs to be portable. Not just in terms of size and weight, but the stability of the entire chassis. I don’t plan on chucking it around, and it doesn’t need to go in an airplane carrying on. But I’d rather not have to worry about the cooler snapping off, or the PCI-e bracket ripping out from the graphics card torque. Horizontal motherboard thusly might be better, but obviously I don’t know all that much so, I’m open to anything.

2. Quiet. I hate fan noise. I despise electrical whine and hum. Obviously noise in unavoidable, but the quieter the better. I recognize that pc silence is mostly based on component choice, but I’m currently using a Hackintosh built in a Nanoxia DS-1, so, that is my rather unfair measuring stick.
3. Power. Gotta have that power. Not simply for e-peen (is that still a thing people say on the internet?). High, and stable frame rates are a must. As if a beefy processor. Or, at least, a good processor. I’ll be gaming, watching, writing, rendering on this thing. Although the rending part is just a learning, hobby thing right now. CAD is fascinating. As is animation.

I recognize that the triumvirate or Portability, Power, and Silence, is a choose 2 sort of situation, but I was hoping someone might have some suggestions. I’m not particularly handy, so serious modification is out of the question. I would like to both not waste money on a ruined chassis, and also keep all of my digits. I like my digits. They’re nice digits, we’ve been through a lot together my digits and me.

So why? Well, I’ll explain. First, this is not an invitation for a pity party. Just an explanation. Please Skip to ANYWAY… to avoid excessive blah blah blahing.

I have very serious Atypical, Vestibular Migraines. Mostly when people think of migraines they think of someone curled up in the corner under 5 blankets pleading with the darkness to kill them to make the pain stop. Whilst I do occasionally suffer from mild headache style migraines, they are not the normal for me.

The reality is that all of the side effects of migraines that people report; dizziness, vertigo, nausea, panic, dread, shimmering or glittering vision, fever like sensation, sweats, cramps, loss of mental acuity, loss of major, and fine motors skills, etc, etc, etc, are in point of fact not side effects. They are all separate events in and of themselves.

My triggers are light and motion. Extreme sunlight, is bad, although I tend to wear sunglasses even on overcast days. Worse, however, is modern lighting. LED, CFLs, Fluorescents, Halogens, etc. Also, jittery motion, or unsmooth motion(fluctuating frame rates). Or the appearance of unsmooth motion even if the motion itself is fine(Netflix video playback for example. FPS might be smooth but image quality changes and dropped frames instantly make me sick. No HoC or Daredevil for me).

As such a laptop is out of the question. I know because I’ve purchased more then 18 different devices over the past 2 years only to have returned them all. I’m still on an iPhone 4s, still with iOS 5, as it was the last OS they made before introducing FRC/Temporal dithering(all the flashing pixels. All the flashing pixels, Jesus Christ.).

So as much as this is a “Hey internet, help me pick a case!” it’s also more of a, “Hey internet, help me build a portable rig!” which constitutes a screen as well.
I recently tried a TN Asus swift panel. It worked a treat game playing wise, something I’ve not been able to do in years. Sadly, I discovered that TN panels are the devil. Made me sicker then a rum drunk sailor on shore leave.

So far, the only screen, other then the iPhone 4s(which I use whilst wearing a pair of cheap blue blocker glasses from china, otherwise, death,) is a Dell U2713HM, with an ICC profile from TFTCentral, set to 5700K temperature(very nice feature by the way, being able to set the Kelvin, helps an awful lot). And before you ask, no, Flux et al, does nothing. I have no idea why. I assume it’s to do with the color temperature being changed at a hardware, vs software level. Can’t fool my brain baby, it’s way to messed up for your slight of hand tom foolery.

ANYWAY…
For cases I’ve been thinking
Fractal Core 500
Fractal Node 804
Fractal Define Nano
CM XB Evo
CM MasterCase 5 pro/maker/lawn chair
Thermaltake Core X1
Thermaltake Core V21
Corsair Air 240
Corsair 250D
Corsair 380t
Corsair 400Q
Silverstone FTZ01
Silverstone ML08
Silverstone FT05
Silverstone SG10
Silverstone PS07
EVGA Hadron
Raijintek Aeneas
Raidmax Hyperion
Aerocool DS Cube
Aerocool
Bitfenix Prodigy/Colossus/Phenom
Rosewill Legacy W1
NCase M1

Yeah, been at this a while…

I’ve also found I’m probably going to need a 27 inch screen. Although I could possibly instead get a 34 inch screen as long as the visual morphing caused by a curve doesn’t bother me(and take my Dell with me). A bigger screen would be nice as it’s literally the only screen I got. No TV for me thanks much. I say 27 inch because all the VRR screens I’ve seen that are smaller then 27 inch and IPS are all 6bit screens that use FRC/TD to fake 8 bit color.

I also really, really, really don’t want to start a holy war here, so please just don’t, but I’m stuck between G-sync and Free-sync as well. Cheaper DOES seem better, but G-Sync seems a more complete, and from what I’ve read, subjectively slightly smoother experience. But cheap DOES seem better. I also recognize that new cards are coming soon, so, yes, I do plan on waiting to see what’s what before I pull any triggers.

Any way, if you’ve made it this far, Thank You. Really. Thank you. 1,030 words, jesus. Thanks. Suggestions?
