[The Verge] Nintendo will reportedly cease production of Wii U by end of year

Decided it should be in the rumors sections since this is the only article that's really talking about.

Looks like if this is true I'll have to time it right to get a nice deal on the 32GB pro model and pick up some 1st party exclusives asap before the shelves go empty.

The life of the Wii U, Nintendo’s troubled home video game console, will be cut short. According to a report from Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Nintendo will cease production of the tablet/console hybrid in 2016. The end of the Wii U will likely align with the launch of Nintendo’s latest hardware, tentatively named Nintendo NX.

Nintendo struggled to popularize the Wii U, which launched in 2012, a year before the Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. The Wii U lacked the graphical capability, online functionality, and third-party software support of its competitors, while the Wii U tablet wasn’t as mobile or intuitive as Android or iOS devices.

According to Nintendo, the company has sold roughly 12.6 million Wii U’s worldwide, a diminutive number when set alongside the 36 million PlayStation 4s sold in a shorter window of time. By comparison, Nintendo sold over 100 million Nintendo Wiis between 2006 and 2013.

Not all news is bad news for Nintendo. Today, the company's stock jumped after it found its first mobile hit in the newly released app, Miitomo. The app is currently at the top of Japan app store’s free download chart.

Though Nintendo will bring production of the Wii U to an end, there is no official word on whether or not the system will stop being sold by video retailers. Nintendo has been reached for comment.

Correction: An earlier version of this story included incorrect hardware sales numbers. The story has been updated to reflect hardware sales data publicly posted by Nintendo.

Yes I'm sure they'll cease production of it right after a major Zelda title launches rolleyes.gif

It's been dead since 2014 son

and Nintendo's lost me as a fan ever since their half-assed 3DS with its half-assed software and account system failed to compel me

Hopefully they learn from their mistakes with the Wii U. Namely the following:

- Keeping the Wii name was a mistake. A lot of casual players/people thought it was just an accessory, similar to the Wii Fit board.
- Little to no marketing. Where were the TV commercials, posters, etc?
- Games. It took months to a full year to even get any solid games on the system. If they can keep backwards compatibility for this Nintendo NX then they'd have a good start on this new-gen machine

Or they could, you know, release it for the NX which would also be backwards compatible with the Wii U?

The new Zelda was supposed to launch last year but now there's no release date. I wonder why? rolleyes.gif

Ceasing production makes sense if the NX is the same price. Why make the casual buyer buy the old machine when you can bring them into the next-gen and keep them as a customer for the next few years?

I have never even seen one in real life, and noone I know has one.
I knew more people that had a Philips CD-i than this thing, and that's saying something.

It'll be a cross-platform title like Twilight Princess was. Hopefully Aonuma actually learned from the 3D zeldas and doesn't make another bland, easy snore-fest again.

File this under "meh." A console no one cares about with almost zero games worth playing.

Better luck next time, Nintendo.

I'm extremely thankful that the Wii U exists, as I have never found another system that I could get my wife to play with me. A PC, Xbox, and 3DS all failed to get her attention, but the Wii U and especially Mario Kart 8 worked.

I'll probably buy Nintendo's next console for the same reason. thumb.gif

If this is true it's a real shame.

This console did really bad commercially compared to the Wii, but then again the Wii is one of the best selling game consoles of all time, so perhaps the comparison is unfair.

I really hope the NX is an amazing machine but I'm not going to hype myself up for it.
The N64 and the GameCube were great consoles, they had great games and were really awesome, the N64 was also home to one of the greatest and revolutionary games of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Hopefully they'll be more third party titles on the new console.
