I ran into few bugs now and than but as a whole the game was great. I never got to play the 2nd and 3rd games. If I remember correctly you can carry on your character to the next game which is awesome if you ask me. Honestly guys if you like hack and slash type or RPGs take a look at these series. You can find all 3 games in a bundle with a great discount in Steam Sales.

Alan Wake was amazing too. I was going to buy an Xbox 360 mainly for that game but I was so glad it came out to PC later. I also did not care much to the American Nightmare but oh buy the original game was fantastic. It looked great, it scared me, it made me curious. I truly believe it is a masterpiece for its genre. If somehow you never played it before, let this message be a reminder for you.

I am also glad that Undying is mentioned. +1 for Undying as well. Boy that game SCARED ME... It was simply amazing. I have a feeling that some of you folks in here never played that game, but please do. If you can get by outdated graphics since the game came out in 2001, you will find yourself in a beautiful story in a beautiful game. To this date I am looking for the next Undying. But to this date I am always dissapointed. I think it is one of the few games that I would rate 10 out of 10... Also +rep for the in depth review MindBlank.. You summed it up greatly. thumb.gif

Yeah its a great game I also only played the 1st, but the nostalgia just made me buy the Final Cut version that includes all 3 games and more, just hope I can import my character from the 1st.

I was pleasantly surprised by Alien: Isolation when it came out. The name of the game was to outsmart and evade at all costs, and the game was beautiful and true to the original movies atmosphere to boot.

Dark Souls 1 blew me away when I played it - pumped for 3.

Can't participate in a thread like this without mentioning S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - perfect blend of shooter, RPG and Open-World.

I think I've played every type of genre except dating sims games. Maybe its time to get into those series hmm....

Gonna add all of them now thumb.gif

I felt it took the concept of the Van Helsing games, and improved on it in a bunch of ways.

Also, this Undying game looks really interesting, it kinda reminds me of another game I really really enjoyed when it came out: Condemned: Criminal Origins. I'm not sure how well the graphics hold up nowadays, but it definitely one that's worth checking out!

We have similar taste. I was going to recommend Victor Vran some other day. It is a great time killer. Not a masterpiece but definitaly a game worth checking out. thumb.gif

And +1 on Condemned. The first game was amazing. Second one was kinda passable. Undying, though a different type of a game, I believe takes the crown. However the graphics are outdated even compared to Condemned.

Going to add Fractured Space to the list. And I agree with BF3. I had much more fun than BF4... Additional +1 on Max Payne 2, Walking Dead, Crysis thumb.gif

The problem is that I believe you have to have the first game installed on your harddrive. Than the second game can see the character. If you delete the first game, the second game can not find the character in anyway. I had to reinstall the 1st game redface.gif

Great!

I played Alien:Isolation with my DK2 using a hack - terrifying to say the least!

Also, if you now have an interest in STALKER, I would recommend downloading the OGSE mod - http://www.moddb.com/mods/old-good-stalker-evolution

It's completely stand-alone and one of the best mods for STALKER. Basically, it takes the Shadow of Chernobyl game and adds a lot of area, quests etc. that were cut from the original game. It's stable and has a number of graphical improvements as well. The mod came out in Russia last year, and just last month they released a great English translation of it. And since it is stand-alone, it's FREE!

Warning - STALKER is incredibly unforgiving and provides no hand-holding! thumb.gif

The list in the OP has many very well known games, and I see people recommending Watch Dogs and newer Battlefield games. Come on now...

I'll point out some lesser known masterpieces.

  • Neverwinter Nights 2: Complete - Pause-and-play tactical RPG. The base game is somewhat known, but the expansions less so. My emphasis is on Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir, its first and second expansions respectively. Mask of the Betrayer is a worthy spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment, with arguably more role-playing. What does this mean? It means it is within the top two best story-driven RPGs ever made along with Planescape, and objectively it has significantly more role-playing than every other story-driven RPG other than Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, and Fallout: New Vegas. Storm of Zehir is criminally underrated as it easily and objectively provides more role-playing than every other create-your-own-party RPG I've played, which includes Icewind Dale, Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin. This game also has over 400 spells and over 400 feats, and more races and classes (and thus playstyles) than every other single player RPG I know of.

  • SOMA - Psychological horror / survival horror. Easily the greatest horror game of all time to my estimation, and I've played them all. It isn't just the storytelling that makes it so good, it's everything: the atmosphere and interactive world, the diverse enemy design (almost every enemy encounter is with a completely unique enemy with distinct AI programming), the non-repetitive gameplay.

  • Penumbra Collection - Existential horror / survival horror. Penumbra: Requiem is totally unneeded though, it's an expansion that tries to force a less ambiguous, less original ending. No thanks. While Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the game that directly revitalized the horror genre, Penumbra was the true beginning of this revolution as Amnesia uses the same formula (it was made by the same people). I wonder why Penumbra didn't have as much impact, perhaps it's the setting which is less memorable than Amnesia although Penumbra's story is far deeper. Includes some of the best dialogue quality of any game as well as two of the best antagonists of all time, especially Clarence who has so much memorable dialogue.

  • Underhell - Survival horror / psychological horror / FPS / stealth. It's FREE, get it here. Only requires Source SDK Base 2007. It is an episodic game currently up to chapter 1 (along with a prologue). Three more chapters and an epilogue are planned. It is an excellent mix of genres, keeping the gameplay non-repetitive and always interesting throughout. It is thrilling, you'll be on the edge of your seat the whole time. The action is intense and amplified by the survival horror elements, the gameplay is pleasantly realistic with incredible attention to detail such as dynamic side quests/encounters which are always in different places or may not appear at all. The psychological horror is logical so far and clearly building to something big. It is filled with artistic flare, and it certainly feels like a high budget design despite being technically a mod. It even has its own excellent soundtrack.

  • Anna: Extended Edition - Psychological horror / puzzle. One of the best games to demonstrate how video games can be art, as this game tells its story in a unique, strongly visual way. Really encourages and greatly rewards thinking. It has many different endings at different points in the game; those who play longer and try harder to unravel the story are the most rewarded; more story is indeed unraveled and the game will continue to get even creepier.

  • realMyst: Masterpiece Edition - Puzzle adventure. Myst seems to be largely forgotten, but with this 2014 remake there isn't a good reason to forget about it. This non-linear game is known for its fantastic level design and of course its puzzle gameplay. It's also well written and has such a unique style.

  • Dark Messiah: Of Might and Magic - Action. Not really an RPG at all despite what most people claim. This is a PC classic, with some of the absolute best melee combat mechanics of all time. Every action game with melee combat, ESPECIALLY The Elder Scrolls, needs to take from this game's gameplay.

Now for multiplayer games, which I can never call masterpieces since they're just multiplayer, but below is a listing of less known multiplayer shooters that are infinitely superior to the mainstream crap that everyone plays.

  • Natural Selection 2 - Perhaps the most strategic and tactical PvP shooter ever made. It's the only PvP shooter I'd consider playing on a consistent basis, although the playerbase is in jeopardy the last time I checked. We should all do something about that.

  • No More Room in Hell - FREE on ModDB, one of my favorite co-op shooters. Brutal and unforgiving, impressive mechanics with emphasis on realism.

  • Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter - Co-op FPS. Better than Serious Sam 3, these games have incredible levels that really make you want to play through the game. They also have more monster variety and more weapons than Serious Sam 3.

  • ArmA 3 co-op - The game is well known but not really understood. Most people play really weird custom made persistent game modes and just role-play or play cops and robbers or some crap. Let these kids do what they want to do, but they are causing confusion by making people forget that this is a mil-sim designed for tactical single player (squad based) or co-op gameplay. They recently released a 3D editor which is what a lot of old school ArmA fans have been waiting for; the editor and making custom missions have always been one of the main features of the game.

+1 on Penumbra, that crap is scary.

I need to really get SOMA since it is by the same peeps.

Going to have to agree here...

This list added in this thread in particular comes to mind when I think of some of most known games on earth (minus a few of them)

"Zelda: The Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker
Max Payne 2
Alan Wake
Watch Dogs
Battlefield 3
FTL
Fractured Space
Mass Effect 2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Walking Dead
Diablo 2
Serious Sam 3
Crysis"

Not my thread, but at this rate we are just going to have a list of every known game people enjoy in existence and not games that flew under the radar. thumb.gif

I want to recommend Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. It's a free-to-play online FPS, similar to Quake 3. If you have not played this game, then you are missing out on possibly the best FPS experience that has ever been created. Check it out.
