No one has mentioned one of the most underappreciated games of all time - Beyond Good and Evil. Great adventure game.

Yeah, I also said they are different. I was mostly responding on the "miles ahead of modern horror" comment. They definitely are miles ahead of the current Resident Evil games, but there are others that are different but accomplish and provide far more (whether or not it's desired) like I explained. Resident Evil offers little more than its survival horror gameplay, while some of today's horror games (as well as Silent Hill 2) provide survival horror gameplay plus a thoughtful, involving story and they really strive to be more than a game.

I'd wager you never played any horror game from Frictional Games. They are a very different style of horror, but I feel not many people would call Resident Evil HD remake much less Zero "miles ahead" of SOMA, Penumbra, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which all offer so much more whether or not you like them.

Resident Evil Zero's atmosphere is forgettable and the HD remake of the original is just the much better game. Both succeed at survival horror exclusively; trapping you in a weird place (weird and pretty cool in HD remake, less weird and less cool in Zero) and releasing powerful monsters upon the player, giving the player only enough resources to get through the game without feeling powerful. This is indeed something most modern horror games fail at, like Dead Space and the newer Resident Evil games.

Penumbra: Black Plague, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and SOMA are far more intense from a survival horror perspective. The player will feel even more helpless and more burdened. The environment itself is somewhat against you; darkness for one is actually a factor, as both Penumbra and Amnesia have limited light sources.

Monster encounters appear far more threatening especially due to the lack of combat, and SOMA takes this to another level by making almost every single enemy encounter have a completely unique monster with its own distinct behavior. Plus it's simpler to shoot things in Resident Evil than it is to advance through the gameplay of these games.

But then Penumbra and SOMA have a lot more going for them than just monster survival. As far as atmosphere goes, all three of them are far more interactive than any Resident Evil game, a staple of PC gaming. You can interact with almost everything in the environment, which comes into play during monster encounters (setting up distractions for example). All three of them use this interaction to add to its storytelling, SOMA doing this the most although the aforementioned Anna: Extended Edition is perhaps the best example of this in the horror genre. I'll also mention Doorways, especially the first chapter, does a very good job at this as well.

But Penumbra and SOMA in particular have so many more layers thanks to their story, something Resident Evil doesn't really focus on. Whether it's Penumbra's existentialism and its Lovecraftian final antagonist or its excellent character development, its unforgettable antagonist named Clarence in Black Plague and his dialogues (even though the game technically has a silent protagonist, I say dialogue because you will talk back to him), the frantic pace of the story that just never lets up, Penumbra's story and writing quality just add so much additional dread as it keeps getting darker the more you play, and this dread lurks over you even after completion.

Then there is SOMA's story which remains thoughtfully philosophical at every turn, asking big questions and not just throwing answers at you. Although what's most impressive is its ability to ask these questions through its gameplay. Integrating storytelling with gameplay is something PC games always did best (did it start with Myst?), and it's something console games still can't do. I won't spoil either of these stories though, I'd happily discuss more (about horror games in general or specific horror games) via PM.

Government created zombie viruses and related creatures in a mansion and train are video game and movie stuff, but these games are a lot more. So is Silent Hill 2 which you mentioned as your favorite horror game, although Silent Hill 2 has a lot of horrible dialogue and arguably wastes too much time with many of its gameplay segments
.

Good post. You are right I haven't played SOMA (yet).

The reason I love the older Resident Evil games so much is because I admire the forgotten art of camera work, controls and subtle elements that carry a lot of weight.

Maybe my nostalgia is heavily impacting my personal taste, but Resident Evil (the very first one) is the game that changed how I view gaming in general and how gameplay elements like scarce ammunition, very limited inventory space, limited ink ribbons to save and backtracking (revisiting previously explored spaces) influenced my understanding of how a good game can subtly influence me without throwing anything into my face and holding my hand.

It is hard to describe why it means so much to me and others may of course disagree.

As for Silent Hill 2 it is my favorite horror game, because it is a good game for those that don't understand it and a brilliant masterpiece for those who do. In my opinion Silent Hill 2 is in a league of it's own. Sure it has some flaws, especially when looked at from 2016, but Silent Hill 2 secretly analyzes you. Silent Hill 2 doesn't seem to make sense when first playing it, but it does. I am not good enough with words to describe how great a game Silent Hill 2 is.

This video summarizes one part of why Silent Hill 2 is so amazing very well (only watch for those that played the game!) :

As for SOMA : I am going to check it out. It actually was on my list and I remember to be looking forward to it before it came out, but I never came around to. I hope it is very different from Outlast, because I didn't really like Outlast that much.

Few games are in two lists in some rare cases btw guys.

I have added few cool games to my wishlist so far. Thank you all thumb.gif

Hmmm, I never could get into the Resident Evil and Silent Hill games. Did not seem to be scary really, just throw disturbing images in your face. (Which don't bother me, I grew up watching things like Event Horizon).

Otherwise the gameplay annoyed the crap out of me. On the hard hand I did enjoy Dead Space.

Dishonored needs to be on the list. If you have played the game, you need to find a Non-lethal/Ghost speed run and watch it now.

Speed runs whether non-lethal or lethal in that game demonstrate impressive skill, but you miss out on so much of what the game has to offer. It has immaculately detailed sandbox levels with hidden side quests and actual interesting, relevant ambient NPC dialogue, and speed running skips all of this wonderful attention to detail.

Don't forget to check out Penumbra, Amnesia (both of them but especially the first one), Anna: Extended Edition, and Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason as well. Cryostasis isn't sold anywhere right now though, but it's another brilliant story-driven horror game.

I suppose you're aware that Outlast was inspired by Amnesia, as was almost every other horror game since the year 2010, but no they have very little in common. Outlast is the worst kind of B movie horror, it literally has nothing going for it. Not one thing encourages any sort of thinking, it's just a jumpscare fest.

Yeah, aside from those games having no real effort put into them, I have a problem with people who can't read. The list in the OP doesn't really abide to its description either which is unfortunate. Like someone else said, soon it will just be a list of every game that people like.
