I received my second R9 Fury more than a week ago, installed it, and since i'm getting issues with the crossfire (everything works well with one card/ crossfire disabled)
In my games, i get random lags, fps drops for like a second on GTA V for example.
On PlanetSide 2, it's getting worst, my framerates is going like 130, 180, 110, 180, 120, 180, 110, 190 and the game is totally not smooth.
Here is the list of the things that i tried (none of them solved the issue obviously):
Quote:
Replacing Motherboard (p8z77-v)
Replacing CPU (2500k at 4,2ghz)
Replacing RAM (8gb ram)
RMA the second card
Reinstall driver with DDU
Multiple driver version, Catalyst, crimson.
Fresh windows install on another drive (only steam was installed)
Overclock the CPU
Force 8x/8x in the bios
Update Motherboard BIOS
Swap both card slot
Switch the graphics card VBIOS
Unplug other screen to leave only one of them
Tried using a basic 1080p 60hz screen
Downlock the cards
Clock blocker
Disable ULPS
Plugging the PC to the sector (normal plugs) instead of the UPS
Lowest settings ingame
Highest possible settings ingame
and some other things that i don't remember
2 Sapphire R9 Fury Tri X (8x/8x) no overclock
i7 4770k
MSI Gaming 7
16 gb ram 2133mhz
Corsair RM1000 1000W on a UPS that can output 1000w
Windows 10 64
MG278Q
All the screens are plugged on the first card, i even tried with the other screens unplugged from the card, same thing.
Perhaps some will disagree with me but in my experience, crossfire is a bit of a fraud. I had the 390X cards in crossfire for 2 weeks and couldn't get any of my games to play completely smoothly or without some flickering. Yes, it will boost the FPS and it will bench mark well, the 2 cards look great in the case and it feels awesome to have that much grunt in your rig but, the reality is, for just playing games it doesn't really work. I was lucky enough that I was able to return my 390X cards for a refund and replaced them with a single Fury X.
That's just my conclusion based on my experience of crossfire. Multiple GPUs do not work like a single card - the boost in power and FPS is at the expense of stability.
Same. From my conclusion with R9 290 crossfire, nothing but stutter and/or negative scaling. I haven't had a single game since purchasing my second 290 that has properly utilized crossfire.
I was running my crossfire on a freesync monitor too. My games would appear to be ok then I would keep getting a 'drag' like sensation - like hitting a big gravity field or something. I know it's gutting to hear - there are so many benchmarks, reviews and you tube videos of builds of crossfire but it just doesn't work properly.
You are not going to be able to run the newest games at 1440p ultra settings and get anywhere near 144 FPS I'm afraid - not with the current generation of GPUs...
Gutted for you mate - I know your pain.
If it's any consolation, you really don't need to be getting 144FPS - being around 60 FPS is a beautiful thing and once you go over 100 this is too fast for some games anyway - a lot of gamers have to limit the frame rate to be able to play the game comfortably...
It's so easy to get caught up in chasing numbers - I did. But it's also nice to just switch of all the monitoring software and enjoy the smooth hassle free gameplay experience that your single Fury card will give you.
Can you test the games without using any FPS metering software like msi ab? Sometimes the overlays cause spikes. 16.1 was horrible for me with clock drops, i don't use freesynch though. Also, can you check your VRAM usage and make sure your not maxing out?
Hard to say. You have to test other known working games to make sure there is nothing wrong in your end. If you have BF4 try that. 3DMark also would not hurt. I can't think of a game in 2016/2015 that worked well with CFX. It's that bad. GTA V did work fine for me though with 2 x 290X but that was 1-2 months after launch. A lot of things could have changes since then.
I realize crossifre can be problematic, but i don't think this is strictly a crossfire issue by itself. It may be hardware. I dropped windows 10 myself because of shoddy multi gpu performance. Are you sure when you load a driver, windows 10 is not changing it on you right after? I had to end up using a Microsoft patch thing to stop and hide AMD driver updates.
When you install crimson it ask twice about automatically updating to new drivers on the install screens
Are you forcing crossfire in all applications? You should also try flashing custom bios with no boost on both cards and get them in sync. I never had a problem with my 7950's in crossfire with any games until they died. Heat may be a issue that is causing throttling, so you could take that off as well with a custom bios I believe. Try running HWInfo to pinpoint the exact clock drop and crosscheck with other things.
Your cpu is at stock? if it is, you need to oc. can't lv, even an i7, at stock with two fijis. Try to use AB to monitor usages. Make sure your clocks are in full tilt like so . . .
HWINFO 64 will show usages too but the highest spikes. What i use it for is to check temps. Use one app at a time. They can conflict each other. Heck, even Overdrive (if you accepted it) can conflict with AB and others. I know i get flickering with AB in some games since Crimson.
As for Planetside 2, you really need to oc the cpu. Game is very much CPU dependent. I have more than 2K hrs on that game so i know. I have to use 4K to push 2 290s with my i7 Oc'ed. Much rather play it at 1080 using my 7950.
Like i said, monitor your usages and make sure your cards are not throttling and OC your cpu. gl.
EDIT: one more thing, I've seen BF4 eat up VRAM and i read GTA V eats more. Check your VRAM use using either AB or HWINFO. May not be very accurate but at least you have indication.

Low minimums (too low) can be avoided with cpu oc. That is, if cpu cannot feed the gpus. AB will show usages. That's what i suggested to get the guess work out of the way.
EDIT: @zdub, for some there is no choice but to go crossfire/sli (prolly until polaris and pascal highends). If you crossfired 290s with an i5, then that was the first issue. driver could also be an issue but not the first.
Just run hwinfo while you are gaming and record to a CSV. The crossfire settings are in your CCC either game specific, or all applications. I'm guessing your top card runs too warm. Does it throttle after playing for a bit or all the time?
Something seems off for you guys. I dont seem to have any of these issues on fury x crossfire. I do still need clocckbloxker a little though. I have a 4930k@4.6 on windows 7. If your using clockblocker make sure to try the different methods becauzw it does add some overhead and can causs some stutter. I would give windows 7 a try
