!!Final Team Results!!
Overall - 6th Place (320 pts) - Best Finish yet, and we were right on the heels of 4th and 5th place. thumb.gif
Marathon - 3rd Place (80 pts) - First ever medal for the OCN team!!! biggrin.gif
Sprint - 7th Place (57 pts) - Good solid run on this project.
City Run - 5th Place (63 pts) - We dropped a nice big bunker on the opening day, and then fought off the rest of the field to hold on to our spot. biggrin.gif
Cross Country - 5th Place (63 pts) - We kept a very nice steady pace, especially since our team is heavily weighted with AMD GPUs, which are not the greatest for PrimeGrid. thumb.gif
Swimming - 7th Place (57 pts) - A strong finish allowed us to hold on to the 7th spot. smile.gif

What is this event all about?

The BOINC Pentathlon is a two week long BOINC team competition. Five different projects will be crunched over the two week period.

The BOINC Pentathlon consists of 5 separate "disciplines".
  • Marathon (CPU, 14 days)
  • Sprint (GPU or CPU, 3 days)
  • City Run (CPU, 5 days)
  • Cross Country (GPU or CPU, 5 days)
  • Swimming (CPU, 7 days)

The fun and challenging aspect of the Pentathlon is resource management. The 5 "disciplines" are run over a 14 day period, so each "discipline" overlaps another discipline. Figuring out what to run, and when to run it, is what makes the Pentathlon a unique and challenging BOINC points race.

Run-times and projects for each discipline are announced 5 days (Marathon, City Run, Cross Country) or 3 days (Sprint) before their respective start via Blog (Feed , Twitter , Facebook ).
This allows some time to stock up on completed WU's, but it can also be dangerous if you forget to turn in the completed tasks before the deadline. It also adds another twist to resource management, if you are trying to stockpile WU's, while simultaneously running the current active disciplines.

Project Choosing Rules (Click to show)
Quote:
Each team signing up for the BOINC Pentathlon (possible until 27st of April) can suggest one project for each discipline, except for the Marathon which is chosen by the event organizers. The projects with the largest number of suggestions will be crunched.

Projects are not eligible if they have any of the following attributes:
  • were chosen in last year's Pentathlon (Einstein@Home, LHC@home Sixtrack, malariacontrol.net, World Community Grid, yoyo@home)
  • can not provide a sufficient number of workunits
  • support just a few operating systems
  • provide non-CPU-intensive (NCI) applications
  • use buggy or test-only applications
  • do not allow the creation of new accounts
  • don't support WebRPC

To keep this process as transparent as possible, we'll publish the suggestions of every team when announcing the final projects.
  • OCN Project Nominations:
    • Sprint - Moo! Wrapper
    • City Run - Universe@Home
    • Cross Country - Collatz Conjecture
    • Swimming - theSkyNet POGS

I had it ready to go a few days ago, but embedding forms and sheets using the Rich Text Editor seems to be broken. rolleyes.gif Re-wrote the thread in BBCode, and now we're good to go. thumb.gif

The choices for projects are a little different this year.  SETI.Germany Rules > Disciplines

There is a possibility that there will be 2 GPU projects and 3 CPU projects.  The Sprint discipline is now eligible for GPU work, along with the traditional Cross Country discipline.  With the change in project selection, I have added polls to each of the project support threads. (rather than starting separate threads for CPU and GPU project voting.)  Links are in the OP or you can find them here:

I'll get my name on the list tomorrow when I'm not on mobile, as wcg gave me a new crossproject id for some reason and I want to have all of my various id's in the list this time.

... Assuming that it's even on the list this year, and it gives me work units, lol (it's given me all of one so far, woohoo)

EDIT: And entered,whooo.

Sign up button isn't working for me for some reason.
Never mind, I got it.

One thing to consider when voting for GPU projects, I run ATI/AMD only, I have no Nvidea GPU's so I cannot crunch GPU grid.

We have to have an AMD project. otherwise I'm limited to 48 CPU cores. (I'll shutdown the GPU's if needed for the pentathlon)
