[Build Log] Skylake v1.0

Skylake v1.0 - Post-military, new job, long overdue.

4/17/2016

So I've been away from OCN for a long time. Been here on and off ever since I joined up in January of 2008 and have only sporadically had time for my technological hobbies between school, military and family obligations. I want to provide a little background as to what lead me up to this point -- I'll sort of make this my blog I guess.

I also realize that the name of this build isn't very original, but I'm not feeling creative.

I got off active duty in the Marines in January, after 5 years and 1.5 deployments. Up until I joined in January of 2011 I was in college going for a B.S. in Mathematics. Between working part time at a golf course, spending time with friends, and gaffing off classes and going into debt like a moron - I played with computers a lot and started dabbling with writing some code. Mostly Java for this platform calle Aryian (I think that was the name of it) and Pascal for a program called SCAR that automated Runescape 2 to skill up characters and earn gold (hopefully) without getting banned. I was heavy into that sort of thing.

Eventually I got tired of doing all that and felt like I wasn't going anywhere fast.. so I enlisted in the Marines in December of 2009 and left for boot camp in January 2011. Worked on helicopters doing avionics for 5 years, I liked it. A part of me really missed messing with computers though, at the object oriented programming level. I also met a girl and got married half way through my enlistment, so now I'm happily married with 3 children. A combination of wanting to settle down, go back to school for software engineering and wanting to pursue other goals eventually led me to exiting the Marines in January.

So now here I am, earned these education benefits (Post 9/11 GI Bill as well as the chapter 30 benefits) to use towards a degree. I also landed a job in the automotive manufacturing industry doing similar maintenance/electronic type stuff I was doing in the Marines making much better money. Subsequently I have 3 factors creating the perfect storm for getting back on this site and making a new build. 1 - Starting school on April 1st to finish a bachelors in software development. 2 - I have a job that had given me more free time. and 3 - I have more money to be able to put towards this sort of thing without pissing off my wife.

So I figured I would get this thing built before I start school here in about 2 weeks. I originally wanted an AMD build, but when I posted over in the AMD general area asking about the most bang for your buck in overclocking right now, even AMD guys were pointing me at the skylake. Most of the components have already been picked out and ordered as of last night, but I put this together with upgrade-ability in mind - so I'd like to hear your suggestions.

Case (ENERMAX Clipeus ECA3212-BL Black ATX Mid Tower) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811124165

I'd eventually like to build a custom case. I'll be new to case modding, but not so new to fab work, so any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Monitor (ASUS VG248QE Black 24" 1ms/HDMI/144Hz) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236627

I'll be adding 2 more of these at some point, I'll probably order them around the same time I order the GPU - which I still need to decide on.

PSU (Antec VP-450 450W ATX 12V v2.3 Power Supply) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371045

Nothing special here. I'll upgrade this as and if needed.

RAM (GeIL EVO POTENZA 2x4GB 288-Pin DDR4 3000) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144928

I'll eventually want 16 gigs or more of RAM.

Mobo (ASRock Z170M Extreme4) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157675

Suggested to me by @iinversion with upgrade-ability in mind, I think it will do great.

CPU (Intel i3-6100) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=2MN-0004-00002

Center of the build. Using ASRock's "beta BIOS" to OC it. I have no idea what this "beta BIOS" is since I've been out of the game for so long, but it will be fun figuring it out. Maybe I'll watch a youtube video after I post this so I'm not so ignorant.

SSD (Mushkin Enhanced ECO3 2.5" 120GB SATA III) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226831

Small, I know. Had to trim cost where I could to keep the wife happy; let a week or two go by and I'll be doing more upgrading. I would eventually like to have 2x1TB SSD's.

Keyboard/Mouse (Devastator II LED Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Combo Bundle with Red LED Edition) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823129044

Just something I threw in last second. Eventually I will most likely upgrade to the logitech g19 or razer black widow. Maybe a MadCatz mouse. Haven't decided - open to suggestions.

OS - Dual boot?

I'll most likely be dual booting some version of Linux and Windows 10. If you guys have any suggestions as far as what distributions are popular right now I'm all ears.

Everything was about $630 shipped for the first go round, I haven't even received the parts yet and I'm already wanting to put together my next order.

Here's the work space I'm going to be utilizing. Picked up the desk second hand for $40.

Still haven't decided if I'm going to keep that little shelf on the left side. Also - the 46" TV is just there temporarily, I just moved into this house and haven't found another place for it yet.. I replaced it in the living room with a 65" 4k. I may mount this above the desk on the left to use as a sports ticker/weather/stocks/CPU stats/TV thing.

Long term I really don't have a budget. It's going to be more of a 'do what I can, when I can' sort of thing. Maybe $1000 this month, maybe $123 the following. What I'll be doing with the build on a day to day basis is web, email, school, coding, compiling and some CAD. If I find time and get this build right I would really like to do some folding (maybe a 24/7 machine), web design, video editing and GAMING (which I haven't had time for in years). To me it's sort of like owning a diesel such as an LBZ or a 12 valve Cummins tuned with EFI-Live.. it may not be necessary, but it's awesome.

Anyway - that's pretty much it for today. Not much else to do until my parts get here. I've always been fond of this community, looking forward to getting back into it. thumb.gif

You know I've never dabbled with water cooling. I need it to be productive, so I don't want to do anything that would put my build at any major risk - but I definitely wouldn't be opposed to getting my feet wet. tongue.gif

Seriously though, I've always loved thumbing through the water cooling and case mod section over the years and looking at pictures - so we'll see.

Definitely not going to jump right into water cooling.. I want to set up a productive work station first. I want triple monitors, good cable management, and all the aesthetics to be perfect - I may even modify or repurpose the desk since it looks (a little) dated.

Glad to see somebody will hang out. I started clicking around other build logs after I posted this one and I felt pretty inferior. As I get more content to actually post up and discuss, it will get better. Tracking number puts the first load of stuff showing up sometime tomorrow. thumb.gifbiggrin.gif

The case and the monitor arrived today. 24" seems a little small for my taste but maybe after I get 2 more it'll feel better. May end up using the 24" for something else and ordering three 27 or 32" screens instead. It'll do for now, though. I've been thinking about a color scheme for this build.. thinking about going with a black with white LED's. Or something dark red, dark white and dark blue to give it a pissed off patriot look. rolleyes.gif

Case looks pretty decent, reminds me of when I got my first decent case. Spent an afternoon transplanting it all

Pictures and update to come soon. Everything arrived yesterday and I've got it put together! Having to work throughout this weekend, so Monday afternoon at the latest. thumb.gif

Here we go. All put together.

Bonus pic. I work in automotive manufacturing. Here are some mocked up VW's and Mercedes. tongue.gif

Anyone ever taken this "herb" called Kratom? Supposedly for muscle pain relief. Stuff's nuts and costs $20/bottle.

I need to start thinking about what my next round of upgrades is going to be. Firstly, I hate this keyboard. It's noisy and I am constantly making mistakes on it - it looks cool but that's about it. Definitely need to get the desk cleaned up - it's a sorry excuse for a "command center" (as my kids say) right now.

Open to suggestions for my next round of upgrades, though! Lemme know what you think. I'll be including another monitor and mouse/keyboard, regardless.
