My New Xeon Build

Thread Starter
So I decided to get back into the PC gaming world so I just figured I would show off my new build. I was looking into current six core 2011 socket cpus for my build but my father, who kinda runs a part time computer business had a brand new still sealed Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R motherboard so I decided to look around for what was avaliable on it. After shopping on ebay I ran across a Xeon E5645 six core its clocked at 2.4ghz with a 2.6ghz turbo boost and I managed to buy it for $41. I then decided on the cooler master MasterCase 5 Pro chassis. I was going to have to overclock and wanted a better water cooler than air but without having to build a custom loop so I went for the Swiftech H140X Liquid cooler for its custom look and upgrade ability. That enabled my 3.6ghz overclock. The motherboard didnt have a usb 3.0 connection so I bought a USB 3.1/ type C card. Also Purchased an Intel dual band wifi card. I went with the creative labs sound blaster recon3d sound card because of the price i was able to pick it up on ebay "$29" and it gave me the 600ohm head phone amp. Last but not least I went with the Sapphire Radeon R9 Nano. I have wanted this card since i saw it and I know that there is a little better performance for the money but the card looks great in the build and I love the small form factor with the amazing performance. Anyway guys thanks for looking at my build Its not the biggest baddest thing out but its so far been an amazing performer and It was definitely fun building it.

Looks great. You did a nice job.

Sure is an ancient platform though. If your doing something that needs 6 cores it's a good deal, but if you're just a gamer most likely a modern 150.00 cpu mobo combo would offer better gaming performance.

Plus all the modern amenities to go with it like a uefi bios.

I wasn't aware that Xeons were able to be overclocked. Very clean looking build though and good cable management.

Well I do realize that the platform is older but im running my nano at 100% at all times and i have a great gameplay experience on the division. The best thing of all because i was able to get the motherboard for free ive got less than $100 for my CPU, Motherboard, Sound card, USB 3.1 card, and wifi. So for the price I cant beat it. And Yes Xeons are very capable overclockers within reason. Im getting on par performance to an I7-980X.

Most Xeons, especially the newer ones are locked. It's a shame because most of them would run quite a bit faster with the right cooling... I suppose that's what a lack of competition in the market gets us. This chip is one of the exceptions and does indeed overclock really well.

It might not be the best solution ordinarily but that sounds like a great deal for what you paid. Can't beat free thumb.gif A lot of old Xeons are a great deal to upgrade an old platform. Like the E5-1270's flooding the market right now. You can get 8 cores and 16 threads for $50 on eBay right now. Sure a newer architecture with higher clock speeds would be nice but considering the price it's a steal.
