Great writeup; thank you, +rep.

That was me who asked for clarification on the tick-rate wink.gif actually, hehe. I opened my reddit inbox and was stunned when I saw a message reply from tiggr. I thought, oh, this must be some old CTE post I wrote up. I had no idea he was even still on reddit, haha, after the CTE ended.

And! I don't know if it's been mentioned in this thread, but Conquest is changing pretty significantly (at least in terms of how it is won) with BF1. Shameless plug:

Yes, I am really excited about the changes to Conquest too. Although I am not sure how it will effect the gameplay overall in terms of speed, dynamics, etc.

Also, Symthic... I feel like I've heard that name somewhere... Didn't someone from DICE tweet out that they hired some people from Symthic to help balance the weapons in BF: 1?

Lastly, I keep hearing that EA / DICE are really gearing up to take BF: 1 to the competitive scene. I have never really considered myself much of a competitive gamer, but I have always had quite the affinity for Battlefield and usually I find myself at the top of any server that I play in. Does anyone have any recommendations for communities to join if I am looking to get into the more competitive BF scene?

As far as my understanding goes... Server "tickrate" is the rate at which the server can "see" things changing. This means that, on 60-tick server, the server updates 60 times every second. That means that all of the server calculations are done 60 times per second. Like-wise, on a 120-tick or 30-tick server, the server updates either 120 times or 30 times per second. What this all means, is that things like bullet travel, hit registration, player position, etc. is much more accurate the higher the server tickrate is and much less accurate the lower the server tickrate is.

Another interesting thing to note though, is that you cannot take full advantage of a server that has a higher tickrate than your monitor can display. For example, if you only have a monitor that is capable of displaying 60 Hz (60 fps) you will only be seeing HALF of the screen updates compared to what a 120 Hz (tick) server is seeing. Similarly, if you have a 120 Hz monitor and you are running the game at 120 fps, but are only playing on a 30 Hz (30 tick) server, you will be seeing TWICE the updates on your monitor as the server is seeing. This is why DICE is targeting 60-tick servers to be the default on PC, because 99.9% of PC gamers us 60 Hz (60 fps) monitors.

One final note though, do not be afraid to play on a 120-tick (or higher) server just because your only have a 60 Hz (60 fps) monitor. Your gameplay experience will still be a lot more accurate on a 120-tick server even if your monitor cannot refresh as fast as the server can. In fact, I would always recommend playing on the highest-tick server with the lowest ping possible. That is the best way to maximize your gameplay enjoyment.

(If you have any more questions feel free to let me know.)

Hello Everyone,

My apologies for the double-post (again), but I just had to bring you this new gameplay video from the Battlefield: 1 Closed-Alpha. Please take note though, this does not mean that the Closed-Alpha has been released to the public. According to my sources, this footage is from a "pre-release" version of the Official Closed-Alpha that has only been sent out to big YouTubers, Streamers, Press, etc. This "pre-release Alpha" is going on right now as far as I know.

Also, at the risk of outing myself... Feel free to view THIS un-related Battlefield: 1 video for some laughs.

Enjoy!

Nice one! And also, just so everyone knows. Keep your eyes peeled all over the internet. Embargos are lifting left and right on BF: 1 footage and it is popping up everywhere! Plus the "open" Closed-Alpha is rumored to start this week or next week, so watch out for footage of that too!

I didn't notice the link the first time around so here is the quick rundown from the article for better visibility:
Quote:
You should watch the whole video for all the details, but here’s what’s on offer.

Battlefield 1 will support high tick rate servers on release. Servers for the PC version will run at 60Hz minimum.
Tank takedowns are not included in Battlefield 1 multiplayer. Sorry.
Battlefield 4’s visual recoil effects will not be returning. All recoil effects in Battlefield 1 are gameplay-dependent.
Attack planes can only use timed explosive bombs, but bombers have impact explosive ordnance.
Weather affects scope glint, so you can stealth during rain and fog.
3D spotting returns.
Passive spotting won’t be included in Battlefield 1.
There are no cross-class weapons. All classes have a unique load out.
Parachutes make a return.
You can’t block melee attacks.

VG 24/7 wrote this article based off of Westie's video posted above. I went ahead and bolded any truly "new" information that we did not gain from the big Reddit AMA. Thanks again for posting these great videos @Dorito Bandit!

EDIT: Also, goodness gracious, what FOV is he playing on? That looks waaaaaay too stretched out for my taste!

EDIT 2: According to various sources the Battlefield: 1 Closed-Alpha is actually locked at "Medium" graphics settings so that testing results can be gathered across a similar level of performance. I am unsure if this is true or not, but it would explain a lot of the graphical anomalies that we have been seeing in these gameplay videos.
