[Q] Need advice on upgrade plans

I currently have a maximus v gene matx ivy bridge motherboard with an i5 3570k CPU. I have installed a gtx 670 and a sandisk extreme 256 ssd. I'm looking to install a 1080 hybrid (when evga makes one) and a Samsung 950 pro in an angelbird wings px1 pcie x4 adapter card. My first question is, should I wait on the gtx1080ti hybrid or just get a 1080 and get a closed loop cooler for it? My motherboard supports 1 x16 pcie 3.0 slot or 2 x8 pcie 3.0 slots and an additional x4 pcie 2.0 slot. My second question is, am I going to lose out on performance if I go with one of these configurations? Would it be in my better interests to upgrade the rest of the system to accommodate m.2 nvme?

Cheers Dave

You have a nice overall system there. If you can work your slots so your PCIE is 16x and you can have the M.2 NVMe at its native 4x speed aswell then you can do that just fine. each motherboard works its lanes differently so that is something you will have to look at your manual that came with the board. As for GPU. why do you want to go specifically with the hybrid version? Generally i'd say go with a custom cooler card like EVGA's SSC or their FTW and so forth. Aside from lower overall temps you wont gain much. the 1080 seems to be more limited bios/voltage wise for overclocks so a hybrid wont best a custom air cooler design unless you win the silicon lottery. at least that is what 1080 tests are showing right now. as for waiting for a 1080ti, ehhh thats a solid 6 to 9+ months out. If you keep waiting it will end up going something like this. eh ill wait for the 1080ti, then it will be, eh, maybe i'll wait for the 1100 series and so forth. basically if you keep waiting for the next greatest thing you will never upgrade, computer tech advances too fast to worry about whats next until its a month or less out. if you want bang for your buck, go 1070 hands down. if you really want top dog performance get a custom air cooler 1080, if you are really feeling rich go for the hybrid but the 1080 isnt a overly hot card to need it. reference card thermal throttles with its default fan profile but can be fixed, custom air coolers so far have been 75c and under across the board as far as ive seen. Hope this helps biggrin.gif

Thank you for the reply I will be limited to 8 x on the graphics card or PCI Express 2.0 on the SSD. those are my limitations for my motherboard. As per the temperature and card selection I will be purchasing just ahead of the release of Battlefield 1. I have had such a sour experience with my stock GTX 670 cooler that I am kind of burned out on air Cooling, pun intended. I want to max out at 70 not 95 + crashing.

hmm that is a bit tough. generally 8x shouldnt limit you too much assuming its pcie 2 or 3 at 8x. i havent seen testing with 1080 8x vs 16x but with the 900 series i know it was minuscule. like 980ti was no more then 5 percent difference between 8 and 16 i believe. You could do the 1080 and NVMe and just run it at 8x until you upgrade your motherboard and such. its tough to say for sure because it will either be a pinch for one side and alot more money on the other. i'd say if you plan on upgrading your board within the next few months after the gpu upgrade then do the temp 8x option. If not then maybe hold off on the nvme and use those funds for the new board and such? there really isnt too much of a right or wrong here for options though. As for cooling. yea i can totally understand that. reference coolers suck though. they always have. from my experience EVGA makes some of the best custom coolers, as do most of the other main brands. The key imo is always get a custom cooler design like EVGA's ACX, Asus's Strix cooler, MSI's Gaming tier, Zotacs AMP and so on. I know msi's gaming 1080 hits 75c max load with its default fan profile but i havent seen reviews for the other cards yet. Air isnt a bad option to go, reference coolers are the bad option to go haha. but if you have the money and your willing the hybrid will not disappoint at all. ( Side bit, the reference 1080 begins thermal throttling itself at 85c and wont pass it, it will keep downclocking itself until it can stabilize at 85c. )

There is no noticeable difference between 8x and 16x so you will be fine with one card. Tests have been done that even 4x doesn't bottleneck most video cards unless you're using more than one so anyone telling you you have to run 16x is misinformed.
