GUNMETAL SMA8 BLK/WHT/RED "THE RED BARON"

I have been building PCs since the 90s, and here lately for about the last 5 years have gotten into building Water cooled PCs. I have always wanted to get a CL case, but could never justify the price to myself. In the case of the SMA8, this is a case I have been battling on picking up since the winter of 2014. A small backstory on this build if I may.....

About 5 months ago I decided to move forward with 3 new projects, a gaming build for myself, and 2 smaller builds for my kiddos. I wanted to update my gaming rig since I added 3 ROG Swifts in Surround, and my kiddos wanted to help me build themselves a PC. I let my daughters pick out the color themes and off it went. Since I was still in the "Cant justify a CL" phase, I picked up a Corsair 750D since I had done a build in one before (I really like this case). A buddy of mine who also builds PC offered me a 5820K for a price less than a pair of my youngest daughter's shoes, so naturally went to the X99 for my build. Also decided to pick up one more GTX 980 for 3 way SLI since I had saved cash on a CPU for no other reason than I felt like it. biggrin.gif (x8,x8,x8 is good enough for me until new CPUs arrive). Once the build was complete, I enjoyed it for a few weeks, but noticed myself still checking out every new SMA8 build log that popped up on OCN and other places, and wishing I had just picked one up. So at the end of March I pulled the trigger on a Gunmetal SMA8 and the rest is history. But I digress......

So the case will be here on Monday according to UPS. So going to go ahead and get this Build Log rolling. In the interim while waiting on the case I have been picking up additional parts slowly and took apart the old 750D from which I will migrate the main components. I also put together my daughter's pink P400, and started planning my other daughters build (thinking about the new Bullet cases for this one) but that is a different story. Just needed something to do to suppress the impatience of waiting. I don't really know how long this will take, as I am just going to take my time with this to enjoy every minute of building, since that's the part of this hobby that I enjoy the most. Plus I am in the military and a single Dad, so time is precious around here. So without further ado, let's get onto the good stuff.

The Corsair 750D build I am migrating from Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

The Phanteks P400 Build I did while waiting on the Caselabs to Ship. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Again, this build will be on the x99 platform with the 5820K CPU. As soon as Broadwell E drops I will be replacing this with a 40 lane CPU. Later on this year I will also be replacing the 980s with the Pascal series, but for right now, these 3 cards power the 1440p Swifts quite nicely with the games I play, so that will be a later upgrade. Most of the parts again are from the previous build, or I had them lying around. The color scheme I am going with, I am continuing over from the old 750D with Gunmetal, White, Black, and Red. The following is a list of components and watercooling components. It is not all inclusive, as if I listed all the different Bitspower fittings and smaller items we would be here forever....

Main Components
1. Asus X99 Deluxe Motherboard - Been battling on this one too. I love this mobo, but for some reason can't shake the want for a RVE. If thriftiness wins out in the end I will be sticking with this one.
2. Intel i7-5820k CPU (once new CPUs drop this will be replaced)
3. Nvidia GTX 980 x3
4. Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB RAM
5. Corsair AX1200i PSU
6. WD 1TB HDD (for audio files and other storage)
7. Corsair 250GB SSD (OS and other stuff)
8. Sandisk 256GB SSD (Games)
9. And of Course the SMA8 Gunmetal

Watercooling Components
1. EK 250ML Reservoir x2
2. Alphacool VP655 Pumps x2
3. EK 980 GTX Waterblocks x3
4. X99 Deluxe Monoblock
5. Alphacool ST30 560mm Radiator
6. Alphacool ST45 480mm Radiator
7. XSPC AX360 Radiator (Going to attempt to squeeze this up front, If not Ill use the 240mm)
8. 10/12 Bitspower tubing
9. Bitspower Black Chrome Fittings galore (for above midplate)
10. EK Fittings galore (for below midplate out of sight)
11. Mayhems Aurora 2 Silver for the GPU loop and EK Pastel White (had it left over from another build) for the CPU loop. If this color scheme doesn't look good, I'll go with white in both loops.

Additional Components
1. Ensourced Sleeved Extensions
2. Corsair 120mm and 140mm fans
3. Red paracord sleeving (for pumps and fans)
4. Silver and black heatshrink
5. Phobya Red Sleeved Fan Cable Splitters

Still to pick up/Undecided
1. Fan Controller - I would love to pick up an Aquero for this, but with my original plans for the 360 rad up front, I would have zero bay space for this. Now if this idea falls on its face and I end up going the 240mm route, I will be picking one up.
2. More terminals/connectors and sleeving for fans. (enroute)
3. Another WD 1TB HDD (for RAID 1). Not trying to lose all my video files, pictures, and MP3s.

Planned Upgrades
1. New Nvidia Pascal GPUs. I might just wait until the fall and see if a Ti version releases and then pick a couple of those up.
2. Intel i7-6xxx CPU - haven't decided on one yet, but need to grab one with more PCIe lanes than the 5820k.
3. Additional RAM - I might begin to start with video editing in the near future (something I have wanted to get into for a while now), so an upgrade off the 16GB I have now will be a plus.

AND NOW WE BEGIN......

Preciate it. Yeah I have been through the CL thread a few times. Some really nice builds in there, and I got the final nudge over the edge to purchase from scrolling through that thread. HAHA

Thanks! I really liked your Division Build. Was one of the builds that gave me the final push to get one of my own.

So the UPS tracker says today is the day. After checking the status for the umpteenth time at work it says delivery by end of day. Last weekend didn't get much small stuff done. Was helping a friend on her house she just bought hanging drywall and such. Had to do a last minute order with PPCS for some small stuff to get the fans and pumps sleeved. But once tonight hits things should start picking up. Just trying to have the patience to make it through the day.

Well I think I'm losing my mind but I can't shake the want to get a new Mobo. Reasons behind this are as follows.

1. I have ZERO issues with the x99 Deluxe. It's a great board, solid with no issues. However in my mind in the grand scheme of things I'm imagining with this build the white colors would overdo it and really don't blend with the overall color scheme I have in mind. Now this could be fixed by painting the shroud which I have the paint to do but I'm still on the fence with that. Plus it's and older x99 board and some of these new boards have more options.

2. I've been looking at the RVE of course, and also the MSI x99 Pro Gaming Carbon, the Gigabyte Gaming G1 Wifi, and the new EVGA FTW K. Sole reason behind these is the fact that they blend in with the Red/black portion of my color scheme. The white in the build will be minimal minus the CPU loop so I'm trying not to put too much other white in there (hence the want to replace board). Other than gigabyte I haven't had any experience with EVGA or MSI. I hear both good and bad things.

Any thoughts?

You bet I do. I would easily remove the I/O Sheild, the Mosfets from the back of the board where they connect. Pick up a nice can of Paint, and do what you like. That way you have those parts away from the board and then you can do as you please.

Your circuit board of the X99 Deluxe is already a grey/black (Which matches everything) so there would be no need to paint the pci slots or anything (Like I did with the RVE)

What do you think about that? It would be a great project too! The mosfets, and I/O Shield can Easily be removed. I would try that first before looking at another board. I know when I dropped 450$ on the motherboard for my build, it hurt just a little. I couldn't imagine doing it twice because of colour. rolleyes.gif
