Dell or HP??

Thread Starter
Looking to swap out my current white box for a more purpose built box. Budget puts me at an ML350 G6 or a Poweredge T410???

Needs to be quiet is the main requirement.

I have an adapted 5805 and 16gb of registered ddr3 along with 6 3tb reds waiting to go in.

If memory serves neither are particularly loud but I remember the T410 being quieter than the ML350 G6. Kind of like a typical pre-build PC you would buy at the store. I don't know what they sound like at full load though as I only had my hands on them when they were at idle.

The dell most likely will be quieter- dell loves low speed fans that let components cook to death. lol.

I have a ML350 G6, but I keep it in my basement, so I can't tell you if it's loud. Not to mention I wear headphones when I do anything on my computer, so I wouldn't know anyway. I can't say one is quieter than the other. I've worked with both and neither are necessarily loud except for the boot sequence.

Both are loud at boot as they are designed to perform a full power fan test during POST. The T410 would be preferred if you want a decent tower server and they run quiet. I have a T610 under my desk at work as a test box and it runs quiet enough I don't even think about it being down there. You could probably pick up an R610 on eBay for pennies on the dollar and it is a good home lab / file server and will run about the same price as a used T410. You could find a small half cabinet or a 12u roller rack for about $80 and toss that guy in there. Depends on your budget, but I prefer Dell. I work in datacenters daily and have been a presales, sales, and postsales for a VAR as well. I've seen every aspect of Dell servers and support clustering solutions as the primary resource for Dell servers for a Fortune 1000 as a Systems Engineer. If you need any help, PM me and I'll do what I can to help.
