CaseLabs S5 / X99 / GTX 1080 / Liquid Cooled

Introduction and Purpose

I am starting a build for a new liquid cooling system that will be housed in a CaseLabs Mercury S5. I had been entertaining the idea of doing a build log for this system for a couple of months now. However, I put it aside due to other commitments. I also wanted to find a configuration that suited my needs within a reasonably small and compact form factor.

I will only be reusing a few core and liquid cooling components from my previous builds.

I will use this system primarily for productivity and software development with some light gaming thrown in. My primary OS will be Linux. I will also have a Windows 10 virtual machine for all of my games that have not been released on Linux. The virtual machine will use 3 out of the 6 cores and the GTX 1080 will be passed through to the virtual machine.

This build will be mostly black with a few red accents on the motherboard.

In the past two days, I received and purchased most of the new core and liquid cooling components. I have reused the processor, power supply, pump and the 360 mm radiator from previous builds. I had the S5 case sitting in my closet waiting for the right set of hardware. The remaining components of this build are brand new.

I am waiting until the first day possible to purchase the GTX 1080 and then the delivery of it. In addition to EK releasing a block for it.

In the meantime, I will start testing the hardware that I currently have.

Most of the core and liquid cooling components for this build.

The Samsung 950 will be limited by the M.2 slot on the motherboard because that slot is only 10 Gb/s.

Just a quick status update. I have completed some basic testing on the components that I currently own. There were no failures of those components.

On a side note, for anyone that is wondering the components under are sitting on top of the motherboard box of my first ever DIY computer build. This box still contains a functional D975XBX "Bad Axe" motherboard with an Intel Pentium D 820 and 4 GB of DDR2. On yet another side note, there is a Space Invaders game cartridge for the Atari 2600 in the background.

Core components minus the GTX 1080 under test.

I'm close to finishing my loop in copper. But instead of nickel plating it, have ordered some 12.7x0.91mm 316/316L Stainless and will attempt to do the bends out of it instead. Will be interested in seeing how you go in the S5...

I would recommend the Ridgid 600 Series Heavy-Duty Instrument Benders for bending stainless steel. I tried bending a piece of stainless with a tube bender for copper and it was next to impossible. Bending wise, I am not sure if 304 and 316 are the same or different.

The current plan is to minimize the number of bends due to the difficult of bending stainless and use mostly elbow fittings.

Why did you choose 316 over 304?
