Anyway which one do you prefer to use?

Thanks for the article. Rep+

It seems like GWX Control Panel is more advanced, although the deletion of the Windows 10 installation files also happens if you use Never10:
Quote:
GWX Control Panel does all of that and goes the extra mile -- several miles, in fact. If you use it to turn off the Windows 10 installer's boorish behavior, GWX Control Panel will also detect and delete the 3GB to 5GB of hidden installation files, and it will delete the GWX subsystem Microsoft may have installed on your PC.

Also, if your Windows Update dialog box says "Upgrade to Windows 10," as shown in the screenshot, GWX Control Panel will revert the dialog to an everyday Windows Update dialog box. Never10 may or may not do that -- it's not clear to me under what circumstances it might happen.

The functionality mentioned in the last paragraph will come in handy as I know of one case where after having uninstalled the Windows 10 related KB files the Windows Update screen is still showing that it's downloading and installing Windows 10 despite the fact that it's just doing normal updates. I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

Personally I use neither, but that's because I caught the news about Microsoft's intentions early on and as such got rid of those KB's in advance while they were still dormant and never let others in in the first place, so it doesn't make sense for me to let them in now in order to be able to use either of these programs.

Microsoft has now said that they made a mistake. The 'X' or Cancel on the dialog window will not longer be the equivalent of OK.

A new dlalog box will replace the existing one that came out on the weekend. This was in a response to a BBC UK. request for comment doh.gif

We fix it after we get what we want.. Works ever time - Suckers.

I just saw this on a work computer before visiting the page. Now if you click the x button a new box pops and says your windows 10 installation has been scheduled for x day and time. Then at the bottom it says confirm or cancel this this upgrade.

and I prefer 8.1. I tried 10 a few months back and it felt like a performance downgrade.

I looove how this thread is just full of people arguing over "why do people keep using MS, if you dont like it just go get another OS."

Ok.

What other OS?

PLEASE, could someone PLEASE explain WHAT other OS is there, that the average Soccer Mom and Grandma/Grandpa would find user friendly?

People making these arguments about how everyone should just stop buying Microsoft need to stop and consider for a moment, just how many people are really out there in the world using MS software, and just how DUMB these people really are. Microsoft and its software has been the ONLY "user friendly" option for the PC for over 30 years now. I'm 41 years old and its literally the only thing my retired parents understand. My Mom just knows that she turns on her laptop, and Windows boots up and then she can email her sisters and Facebook with my Brother... my Dad uses his to manage golf scores and Tee Off schedules for the local retirement community they live in... neither even know what Linux is, and have never even heard of it... let alone would ever understand how to use it.

My brother is a liberal socialist who isn't very tech savy, obsesses over Facebook, and could careless about what the computer is doing in the background, just as long as it does what he wants it to do.

These are the kind of people that Microsoft has targeted Windows 10 to.

The dumb masses... and they're going to take it, because Microsoft told them its an important update, and they don't know any better...

Unfortunately, the people who do know better, are too much of an insignificant minority that it just won't make a single bit of difference.

The only difference that can be made, is someone filing a class action lawsuit against Microsoft.... but even then, its a such an extreme longshot because you'd have to get other people in on a class action to make it count, and too many of Microsofts every day customers are just too dumb to understand exactly WHY such a law suit would be filed in the first place... to them, it would be little more then an inconvenience to their every day use of their personal computer.

To them, all they care about is the fact that they can turn on their computer and do their daily routine...

They don't know, nor care about what Windows is doing in the background, because as far as they're concerned, the computer is doing what they want it to do.

Period.

Your comments tick all the right boxes.

Microsoft's OS being widely used and supporting more games is not a valid argument against Linux, it just means Windows is more popular for games. The advantage of Linux is not only that it's free and it has many distributions, it's also that it allows users to escape from Microsoft which has increasingly been willing to erode the user's privacy.

If you or anybody else has an application that runs on Windows only, you can still protect your information by dual booting, using Linux partition for storing private information, surfing the web etc. and booting into Windows only for using that one specific application. Gamers will not be 100% satisfied on Linux but they won't be without options either, there's just enough in the Steam library to keep someone busy, though that's besides the main point which is privacy and giving the user total control, like we're used to. I do think this site is not just for the average PC user, it's where smart people congregate to share ideas and thoughts on improving their knowledge of technology, the proposition that Windows is no longer fit for every day use for tech savvy users is a valid one imo.

Linux is weird, but not useless

" On the other hand, it’s the best information we have as there are no alternative reports of its kind. "

I'll bet you have. Where are substantial claims against them?

Actually there is a lot of linux operating systems that are just that.It is not hard to click on an internet icon.

The thing is that there favorite software isn't going to work.

But for email, videos and facebook, linux is great and very easy.

The person making the assertion is the one that needs evidence. I don't need to substantiate my claim that his claim lacks substantiation - it just does, because he didn't provide any.

All of the metrics we have show a small minority of Linux users in general, and a very, VERY small minority of Linux gamers in particular. That you can find weaknesses in the metric does not make the converse true, that Linux is some holy grail of awesome that everyone can and should switch to if they don't like Microsoft's practices.

To be clear: I am not defending Microsoft's approach. Pointing out that there are no viable alternatives, therefore, demonstrates how important it is that we discourage Microsoft from this path.

I just try both, Josh Mayfield's GWX Control Panel is much better and do what I really want like make the tray icon disappears.
