"to me" it's pretty straight forward. It is a convenience downgrade akin to taking the bus over using my own car. I have less options and higher stress to get the same things done.

It's not precise. Let me give you one critique, with Linux you can build your own version starting from the Kernal, can I do that with a bus or would I even be legally allowed to drive it myself if I were a person that had a driver's license only for a car? Also, a bus goes on specific routes, a car goes where you want it to, Linux in that sense is no different than Windows but with your analogy, it's implied that they are fundamentally different in the interaction which is factually wrong.

I realize now that even my analogy has issues, this is why I think computers don't compare well to cars. Tesla cars actually run on Linux and Linux isn't specifically for users with anti environment (is that a thing?) views, both Windows and Linux have the same issue with e-waste, though it's not their fault per se, hardware cannot be taken out of the equation. However, that's not to say Linux is preferably paired with polluting technology, which my flawed analogy would imply.

The presence of one privacy hole does nothing to excuse another and things like what's described in this article will always be a mark against any who implement them.

Three of my PC's have Win7 on them. One is dual boot with Win10.

I like win10 just fine, but several of my programs don't run on Win10, so I have no choice. Especially the CAD program which costs $9000 to upgrade to the new one where Win10 is supported.

No thanks!

And this, is common knowledge in the security circles for years, but it just happened that someone famous to the wide pubblic got out to say it loud:

Antivirus is dead, says maker of Norton Antivirus

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2150743/antivirus-is-dead-says-maker-of-norton-antivirus.html

The another famous came out:

John McAfee: “Antivirus is dead” (as in McAfee Antivirus)
http://thenextweb.com/insider/2015/09/03/john-mcafee-antivirus-is-dead/

Antivirus keeps going, beause the average Joe wants "the easy solution". The "install and don't think about it". Much like most people want a prebuilt PC, because they don't want to learn to built on their own.
And because it gives a false sense of security (if it doesn't say i am infected, then i am not).

What's the common denominator between antivirus and patches? They all arrive after the unfortunate event. It was dead long ago, but it's "easy to understand", "feels safe" and "people are used to it". So it goes on.

Actually there is a lot of linux operating systems that are just that.It is not hard to click on an internet icon.

The thing is that there favorite software isn't going to work.

But for email, videos and facebook, linux is great and very easy.

...and thats the catch right there.

Everyone's favorite software.

Which is what?

Usually it is Microsoft, software...

My dad for example can't survive without his Microsoft Office. I've tried to show him Open Office, for example, as an alternative and while it IS very similar to MSOffice, its still just not the same and the thing with MSOffice is other then a few cosmetic upgrades over the years it essentially has not changed in the past two decades. MS Word, is still MS Word. Power Point, is still Power Point... its all still just the same features, the same menus, the same lay outs... its just presented in a slightly different manner with each "upgrade" version.

Even I've tried Open Office myself. I'm a writer, and I absolutely loved using MS Word and then when I couldn't afford to upgrade my version, I switched to Open Office and found that OoWriter (their version of Word) was lacking a number of key features that were exclusive to Word that I found extremely useful.

People have had the past 2 - 3 decades to become accustomed to, and used to, the things that Microsoft offers to them with little to virtually NO competing product...

So now its Microsoft, that is the favorite software of the dumb masses out there.

It will, you just need to install WINE and you are good to go. Not so good for games because of the overhead but it can handle MSO and their favorite browser just fine...rolleyes.gif

It will, you just need to install WINE and you are good to go. Not so good for games because of the overhead but it can handle MSO and their favorite browser just fine...rolleyes.gif

WINE doesn't always work with productivity programs, such as 3D CAD or, in my case, a $600 music engraving program.
