My first ATI gpu was a Mobility Rage 4MB. I'm on board with a new Rage product!

Same here, I still have a Rage 128 Pro sitting in a box in my closet, although i would rather the GPU be called Rage and CPU something else.

Fundamentally incorrect.

The chips do not produce more heat, the heat density is much higher for Intel chips on a smaller node which makes it harder to remove.

Example. I have a plate 100x100mm and another 30x30mm,I put 300w of heat into each, the 30x30mm will have a hotter temp as the dissipation area is much smaller.

If Zen is named FX I'm going to cry because it's a horrible idea. I'm hoping they name it Phenom III or something else.

Please use logical thinking and judgment, rolleyes.gif AMD FX CPU name has very hard foundations from the past. One below average FX CPU lineup=FX goes into the garbage, this logic does not make any sense, do you even remember Athlon 64 FX-51?wink.gif

Flipside of that argument, look what Intel did to Pentium after 4 and D were replaced by Core/Core2/i series. If they were to phase out FX, this would be a good time to do it.

I agree with Buris.

In spite of the beginnings the chips with the FX name had, the overall outlook as been very negative since Bulldozer (AKA Faildozer). I think continuing the FX name might be fine for the low end CPU, but for the high end.

A new Phenom would excite people, especially if it's a total beast of a processor.

Definitely AMD should dump the FX name - leaving it only for the construction core CPUs.

I think AMD should just use ZN - pay homage to the people who have been paying enough attention to know that Zen = AMD's attempt to once again take on Intel head-to-head.

I'd also like the name to indicate core count and base clock, making naming EASY:

AMD ZN-6-3.4
AMD ZN-6-3.6 X
AMD ZN-6-3.8 X BE
AMD ZN-8-3.2
AMD ZN-8-3.4 X BE

The 'X' indicated SMT being enabled.

Another scheme:

AMD Z6 3.4
AMD Z6 3.6 X
AMD Z6 3.8 X BE
AMD Z8 3.2
AMD Z8 3.4 X BE

I think the cpu only line is 6 and 8... the APU will probably be a quad.

How about Athlon? wink.gif

Whatever it may be, it should pay homage to the Athlon name if they are really trying to get back into the market since they failed with using the FX name. I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with an AX-850, but that may confuse it with the A10 line.
