if you are streaming/capturing that is another story, if you have many things open and running while gaming this also is another story
so what optimal performance CPU do you buy for gaming then ? 8 cores/threads ?

so for gamers this Fall it will be Zen 8-core (or 6-core) vs i7 Kaby Lake ?

That market is small and can afford WS level prices.

yup, and my point is, they will already be producing chips for that segment. with a chip that scales to 32c/64t, what else would you think they are targeting

this segment is full of big spenders that want to save a buck and improve efficiency, with the amount of Silicon they HAVE to move (ala gf contract) it doesn't make sense to hold back in any market that can buy the chips.

I don't doubt a 16c/32t chip will cost close to $2000+ if it ever becomes a thing.

that is much more profit that 4x 4c/8t chips for 300$ each

Sure, but its not going into the AM4 socket. Its going into the WS/Server platform. Nobody has said that is not going to happen.

I don't know how much the extra single thread performance will bank in terms of future games

on intel gen to gen there really isn't a huge jump.

i'd tend to vote for over doing threads a little, but i multi task alot and have much going normally

but it really comes down to market point and performance. if more things are going GPU bound like the latest DOOM the small difference you will see in benchmarks won't play out in real world scenarios if AMD actually gets as close as hw/bw IPC as it is rumoured and promised

inB4 Opeteron FX on the LGA server socket with OC capabilities..

We don't know if it is possible on AM4 or not. i'm not convinced that it can't be.

AM4 MCM is not happening. The socket will not be large enough to physically hold two dies on the package and route connections.

Not to mention the problem of bandwidth. 128b DDR4 is not going to be able to feed something with 32t. I dont see the 16c monolithic die coming to the consumer space at all either. It will make more money selling to OEM server SI companies.

500 would be really low for 8 threads when the 4790K can do 900 at slightly higher frequencies though
then the 8C16T version will only get around 1000 at 4ghz? Only slightly better than a 4C8T?

i expect a 4c/8t zen part to land somewhere between a fx9370 and the 4790k depending on clock speed. but is the 8c/16t IS actually 95w we are looking at a close to 60-65w part @ 4c/8t with a higher base clock than the 8c/16t version

so mid 700s to high 900s ( in terms of score that is in r15 mt cinebench)

That was back then when that was their plan at the time. Excavator and Steamroller are totally different beasts actually the only emphasis was getting the efficiency up on this horrendous architecture.
