[Official] NVIDIA GTX 1080 Owner's Club - Page 158

I am also trying to wait for the 1080TI, lol. Another bad aspect of SLI is that in CPU bound situations, SLI will lower performance by about 10% (probably due to the additional driver/game management overhead for SLI). That's at least what I found when doing extensive tests in Total War games (those are pretty easily CPU bottlenecked, even with sth like a 5Ghz I7 CPU).

CPU bottlenecked games are not very common (Arma 3 is another example or Project Cars in the rain with a lot of opponents I think) but just sth. else to keep in mind for SLI.

I also hope that DX12 will help with that problem due to the better multi-core usage and massively increased draw-call performance between CPU and GPU. But at the moment most DX12 games actually have really bad SLI scaling if at all (e.g. Rise of the Tomb Raider, Hitman)

Does anyone know the difference between the MSI Gaming and Gaming X? Is the Gaming X just factory OCed?
Just got my 1080 MSI GamingX - at 2109MHz compared to TitanX at 1465MHz and gains go from 0% (BF4 5K) to 9%.

I think I might just return it for refund...

Btw, that poster knows his stuff, he is a major contributor for a big custom SLI bit thread on http://www.forum-3dcenter.org/

Is there links to testing for this? Doom capped at 60 FPS doesn't struggles to even utilize a single 1080 over 60%. I find it hard to believe that bandwidth limitations are necessarily the reason why 1080s in SLI on x8/x8 PCI-e 3.0 are seeing a performance hit. Then again, I haven't seen any results that really show this in the first place. I'm not trying to discredit the guy or you, but I would just like to see conclusive results.

this is what got me too biggrin.gif

yeh maybe the titan X runs close to the 1080 but other games the 1080 will destory it..

coming from a guy who recently had a titan x underwater @ 1470/8000 a kingpin @ 1500 1070 @ 2176 and now a 1080 @ 2152 lol

the kingpin/ titan x is faster in BF4 than the 1070 overclocked but in games like projects cars a 1500mhz kingpin matched exactly a 1070 overclocked in project cars

plus overall my loop runs cooler, the 1080 on the other hand is faster albeit by a little in bf4 but need all the extra performance @ 3440 tongue.gif

the titan x would get very hot with a flashed bios and unlimited PL compared to this 1080, considering im only running GPU/CPU off a single 240mm I need the cooler stuff smile.gif

Still reading through the thread. The reason I'm so skeptical is based on the review below:
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GTX_980_PCI-Express_Scaling/10.html

Granted, the GTX980 is severely outperformed by the GTX1080 now, we're seeing a very small difference and that difference doesn't really get any type of significant until the slot that is uses is PCI-e 1.1 x8. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be possible to 'measure' how much bandwidth the GPU is trying to pull from the lanes. The issues seem to be more related to not-so-great scaling off the bat.

I know. It seems very game specific. In the same thread u can see that for Ryse the difference is already more like 10%:
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GTX_980_PCI-Express_Scaling/15.html

And it's also similar to the HB-bridge video where many games show minimal differences and some show dramatic differences.

Agreed.

I found this video as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KOTiee5RqA

I'm pretty happy with how he did the comparison considering he did the best he could to loop the same portion of each game to do the tests, so I think that's a really good representative. And he is seeing quite a difference in some games, and not so much in others. I definitely hope to see someone do a similar test with the GTX 1080s soon smile.gif. I plan on going SLI, and I think I'd be ok with the performance hit until something worthwhile comes along. Thank you for posting links and for the gentlemanly discussion!
