[Official] NVIDIA GTX 1080 Owner's Club - Page 178

True enough but when you consider that the vast majority of people buying this card are doing so to actually use it to play games rather than bench, it's faster at stock than my 980Ti was overclocked. It will last me until the 1080Ti comes out at which point I might upgrade again.

Personally I would never buy cards solely because of their bench scores? I get that it gives us a rough performance idea compared to older gen cards but ultimately benching serves no other purpose. Min/Max frame rates are all that I am concerned about.

Just because it doesn't crash that does not mean it's stable or bug free. Ask anyone who has run an SLI rig for any period of time how many games they've found that stuttered or had laggy performance until an SLI fix was released for the game. The games all ran, they didn't crash, but performance was definitely hindered by the game.

Nope, just using a different version of Afterburner than what shipped with the card will allow the 121 power setting. Mine did the same thing right out of the box. I didn't install any of the software that came with the card, just installed the card, the latest Nvidia drivers, and then opened up the version of Afterburner which I had been using for my 770s and it let me go up to 121.

As far as I can tell it doesn't make any difference though. If it was unstable at 107 it was unstable at 121. In fact I've found no advantage to increasing it over the default 100. My GPU runs just fine at 2100mhz and 100 power level.

The gaming bios lets you go to 121% and the OC bios only goes to 107%. So the people reporting 107% have either flashed to the OC bios or are using the MSI Gaming APP to set it to OC mode.

Mmm, I disagree. People buy cards because of Firestrike or Heaven scores. Honestly I don't know anyone that doesn't buy a card based on a bench score (including in game benchmarks). So either the card is **** or the drivers suck. It's overclocking freq is above anything on benchmarks now but it's still lower on the scores and framerates. Somethings up, I really do want to know. Personally I'm waiting on Pascal Titans but if Pascal sucks I'd rather just wait it out.

Is it the same old shady deal of using USB drives and weird commands during boot - or is there some software from their side that can do it?

Assuming you have the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X card you just download the BIOS update and run the .bat file included with it. It does everything else. You can install it from within windows, no need to do anything else.

Read the Acrobat file that comes with the download to see which version you want to install. One boots to Gaming mode by default, the other boots to OC mode. Just run the bat file, select the mode you want to boot to, and that's it. It does everything else.

This. I flashed my Gaming X to the "Reviewers OC vBIOS" and my power limit was reduced to 107% max setting in Afterburner. Went back to my Stock Gaming X vBIOS and 121% again max setting in Afterburner. I also found the review bios to be less overclockable. My default vBIOS provides better overclocking. It's also a newer revision.

If the 1080's power limit was increased from 120% to say 150%, wouldn't it overload the card and damage it in the longrun (or quickly) if cards used more than 120?

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

asic quality is not supported on this card and the number in your screenshot is incorrect. Update your version of GPUz.

The "%" - like 150% - is a value calculated from the base entry in bios... so if you mean that by increasing the TDP to say.. 350W would that overload the card? No. The bios has hardware triggers that will shut down the card in the event of over temp. Of course, overlocking any hardware adds stress to the parts... and if you do, you need to be able to manage the increased thermals. This is no different than mods that increase the TDP and PL on every generation preceding Pascal.I've been running SLI titans at 1.274V and a 475W power limit (+100% over stock) for what - 2 years? Still very strong cards.
lol - this IS Overclock.net, right?

Firestrike on BWE seems bugged, but Mk11 does not. Heaven and Vally are running properly IMO, and in all these, the 1080 is doing better than any previous generation... don't forget to compare ambient to ambient cooling results. Check 3DMK11 Preformance and extreme for 1 and 2 cards on the HOF. and also check OCN's own bench mark threads for Valley and Heaven 4.0.
