[Official] NVIDIA GTX 1080 Owner's Club - Page 235

I purchased the Asus GTX 1080 Strix this past weekend and I wanted to share some feedback. I picked up non OC version at a local shop. I chose the Strix because I felt it looked the best and read that it was very good on low sound levels. Boy was I wrong... After installing it, I loaded up Heaven Benchmark and immediately heard the dreaded coil whine. It's terribly bad. There's no way I'll live with it. I plan on returning it this weekend. I didn't spend $600+ to hear the equivalent of nails on chalk board while I try to enjoy myself. You can absolutely hear it over both fan noise and with headphones on.

Here's what I've tried thus far to mitigate it. None of the below worked.

1) Ran GPU stress tests for over 72hrs at every profile, and power target you can think of. My hopes were that it would somehow subside after baking in. I cannot detect any change after plenty of usage.
2) Flashed BIOS from non OC to OC version found on techpowerup and earlier in this thread. No change whatsoever.
3) Swapped Seasonic Platinum Fanless 520 PSU for Corsair HX750. No change

For me, the ONLY thing that both changed the tone and minimized the coil wine was to lower the power target < 60%. At 60% power you can't go much higher than 1600mhz. I obviously don't plan on keeping to card to only run it at those speeds. Sadly it's going back... I'm very closely looking at the EVGA 1080 FTW, because I know they have good customer service.

On the bright side, the OC BIOS worked like a champ. My card evens out at about 2015-2025 on the OC profile under benchmarks.

If you can hear it with headphones return it. Your only other option is trying a different PSU.

Thx for reminding me.. I did try my other PSU. I have a Seasonic Platinum Fanless 520, and a Corsair HX750. No noticeable change in coil whine at all.

How many have already tried the strix1080xoc.rom on your card(s) ? Im gonna give it ago this weekend when I got some time over to play around with the computer. See if this bios with 1,24V will push the cards higher then 2200mhz smile.gif

found some info that nvidia block 10 bit functionality on gtx graphics card, forcing people to buy quadro?

however, this feature has been reenabled some months ago on a driver revision, can anyone confirm? especially for the 1080?

Last night, half drunkenly I was thinking the following and I need your advice: I know this is the 1080 owner's club, but if I were to find 2 brand new 980Ti (Classified or Matrix) for the price of roughly one 1080, should I spring for the Ti's instead? I know all the implications SLI brings and compatibility issues. Or would my best move be to get a 1080 now and maybe add a 2nd sometime down the line?
