Since you got the card cheap, you really have two options here.... 1, sell it for a significant profit & try your hand at an FE card (legend has it that they are binning those chips) or 2, if you have a watercooling loop, buy a block for $110ish & call it a day. You'll never throttle.


About the OC, one option is the shunt mod. I believe that the SC is basically an FE with a custom cooler. Double check this before attempting, though.

The shunt mod doesn't do anything but override the power limit. If his card is getting artifacts at the offset he's talking about, that's not going to do anything for him.

Yes but, the shunt mod will automatically allow more voltage at any given frequency. It could be artifacting because it just doesn't have enough voltage. But usually the higher the ASIC less voltage at higher speeds, and low ASIC at is more voltage at lower speeds. GPU boost 3.0 automatically determines this.

In my case my GTX1080 ran 0.900volts 1900Mhz, 117% TDP power.

After shunt mod

2,000+ Mhz, 1.030 volts, 95% TDP.

So, it's possible it may help some.

Although, it does sound like he has a terribly overclocking GTX1080.

I would still take it over any GTX1070 anyday.

It's not going to raise the maximum allowable voltage...the shunt mod doesn't do anything for that. It may allow your card to hit a higher voltage because it's not power limit throttling, but.....shorting the shunts doesn't have any direct impact on voltage.

That is not what I mean. I said it increases and allows more voltage for any given frequency. So, if his card runs 0.900 at 1900 then it will allow more voltage at this Mhz, and every other boost level. Obviously it will still be limited to 1.093 volts.

GPU boost 3.0 without shunt would be like this on his card, the shunt mod, makes the card think the TDP is lower than it really is, and therefore allowing more voltage at each state.

1600Mhz = 0.700 volts

1800Mhz = 0.800 volts

1900Mhz = 0.900 volts

Well after the shunt the voltage is automatically higher at each stage!

1600mhz would be 0.800 volts, and so on and so forward.

GPU boost automatically picks voltage, to save power dependant upon each clock. Well maybe it's not enough for such a poor chip. So, the shunt mod may help some. A 60+ Mhz Overclock and artifacts is terrible, if the card is new and is indeed a retail GTX1080, I would return it or RMA. And say it artifacts out of the box or something.

I mean,no matter how i look at it, it is definately better than a gtx 580 lol. But allow me to ask this to you, what would YOU do if you had a card like this that doesnt OC well?

If you had this card, what would you do? Get rid of it?

I would personally sell it as a like new GTX1080 for alot more money than you paid for it!

You could get probably $550-$600 used.

And, you could just buy another one.

What kind of GTX1080 is this?

Is it already Overclocked from the factory?

I've ran my GTX1080FE abunch of times stock, and the original auto fan profile. The card will boost around 1733-1797mhz stock. With the temps at 83C at 4K, and a fan that's barely spinning, to keep it quiet.

It is still a beast!

And at 1080P, and 1440P it will boost even higher to around 1860-1900 because it is running cooler, with less load.

It's still a GTX1080, and people buy the all the time and do not Overclock them! And, they are more than satisfied!

But, if you want to Overclock? Then sell it! And buy another one. The next one will Overclock.

I'm not gonna lie, my Founders Edition GTX1080 during the summer months was usually running at default speeds. My ambient was at 80-84F at times. And I was very happy with it!

How does the memory Overclock?

You sure your doing everything right?

I have a MSI GTX1080 Founders Edition. It's a $700 video card on Newegg, and it overclocks to roughly +250 Core,+525 memory. Original retail box, and all!

That might be true if there were prescribed power limits for each clock state.....but I highly doubt it. Guess we'll see if we ever get to crack open the bios.
