the 8-pin can deliver quite a bit more than 150W... that's just the nominal rating.

ARGH!!!
Quote:
NVIDIA will enable support for three and four card configurations in future drivers (without a key) for specific overclocking/benchmarking tools only, as a way to make sure the GeForce brand doesn't fall off the 3DMark charts. Only those specific applications will be able operate in the 3-Way and 4-Way SLI configurations that you have come to know. There are no profiles to change manually and even the rare games that might have "just worked" with three or four GPUs will not take advantage of more than two GTX 10-series cards. It's fair to say at this point that except for the benchmarking crowd, NVIDIA 3-Way and 4-Way SLI is over.

HEY! I ALREADY BOUGHT THESE CARDS. This is pretty F'd. You can't promise to unlock the cards then say FU.. you can't use them for games!!!

Wow.. If that is true, and no reason to think otherwise at this point, that is absolutely terrible for the consumer. This should have been mentioned during reviews, but I bet Nvidia did not inform the media either.

3/4 way SLi is useless for 99% of games.

Next time maybe you should think and do some thorough research before you splash out $2800 on reference GPU's... just a thought buddy headscratch.gif

It was said on one of the tech channels on youtube, can't remember if it was Linus/hardwarecanucks etc, but one of them said the GTX 1080 will only support 2 way SLI in the majority of applications... 3/4 way SLI for gaming is just silly regardless of that anyway.

Does that mean lots of second-hand FE models will be hitting the market from the 3-4 way peeps?

hrmm.. i have 8! cards..

i also have 7 Titan X.. and almost every game that was important to me worked just great (maybe after some time) with 3/4 way SLI. Including, witcher 3, the division, BF4, fallout 4, rise of the tomb raider, shadow of mordor... etc..
without 3+ SLI i would not have been able to play them at 4k at max settings.
random people bashing SLI on the internet don't understand how it work nor understand scaling. (and yes it didn't work some times.. and some companies refuse to use it all.. i'm looking at you Capcom!)

they CLEARLY said 3/4 would work.. at launch with the unlock key.

Enthusiast Key
While NVIDIA no longer recommends 3 or 4 way systems for SLI, we know that true enthusiasts will not be swayed…and in fact some games will continue to deliver great scaling beyond two GPUs. For this class of user we have developed an Enthusiast Key that can be downloaded off of NVIDIA’s website and loaded into an individual’s GPU. This process involves:
1. Run an app locally to generate a signature for your GPU 2. Request an Enthusiast Key from an upcoming NVIDIA Enthusiast Key website 3. Download your key 4. Install your key to unlock the 3 and 4-way function
Full details on the process are available on the NVIDIA Enthusiast Key website, which will be available at the time GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs are available in users’ hands.
http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/pdfs/GeForce_GTX_1080_Whitepaper_FINAL.pdf

also, 2 1080s isn't enough! I can't run the division with all the settings maxed like i could on my 4 way Titan X. (as an example)
