After going back and forth between the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 i have decided to go with the GTX 1080 IF i can sell my second GTX 970 for a fair price
Probably wont be for 3 weeks but i am already looking at which GTX 1080 to get

So far i think my first choice is going to be the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW both because i think its the best looking card but also because i want to try an EVGA card this time around

I am also looking at the Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1080 and despite the fact its the cheapest of the GTX 1080 i am looking at its also the most boring and plain looking one
The Gigabyte Extreme Gaming GTX 1080 really turns me off both because of its price and to the fact that the cooler is so huge i am worried that the card will sag over time

Been looking at the Asus Strix as well but that one does not appeal to me that much
Long story short is the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW a good choice or not?

I own an Asus PG279Q 165Hz Nvidia G-Sync monitor so what i am looking for is a card that can do 165 FPS in 1440P
Does not need to be at the highest settings not that i play the newest games the first year they are out anyway

I can live with lower but i really want to use the full power of the monitor
From what i have seen a GTX 1070 is simply not powerfull enough for what i want, which is shame as the price is really good

Edit: i am NOT doing SLI ever again as my experience with SLI has terrible over the last two years so i need ONE card even if i have to lower settings.

You can get any of them, I think the bios is not mature on any card, even on the founder's edition ... I'm still waiting the release of some modified bios for FE ...

Not even a single 1080 will be able to push 165fps@2K on new AAA titles, unless you compromise a lot on filters/effects. Also, you will need A LOT of CPU power to push stable 165fps.

I believe i stated i am not playing the newest games and that i am willing to lower settings a bit
Lets say i want to re-play Far Cry 2-3-Blood Dragon-4 would a GTX 1080 be able to do 165 FPS in 1440P in those games?

My CPU is a 6850K and i have 32 GB of 3000 MHz RAM so those are not a problem.

Far Cry 2 most likely. Far Cry 3 if you drop down some settings probably. It's still a very demanding game at 1440p.

165 FPS is not a must even 100 FPS would be way better then the old 60 Hz monitor i was stuck with before
Just Cause 3 is the main game that i want to play and with my old GTX 970 SLI setup i could just hit 50 FPS which is totally unacceptable for me

a GTX 1080 can do JC3 in 1440P from about 80 to 100 FPS which is way better then the 40-50 i was stuck with before.

I installed and tested my 1080 classified today, and I am actually a bit disappointing, I ran Heaven benchmark first to see what my out of the box clocks where, but then the card started to whine really loud, so I tried mankind divided --> again really loud coil whine. Clock in heaven were around 1936... I was expecting at least 2100 or something even pushed voltage limit to the max, power limit to 122%, added a 100Mhz offset to the core and set the fan speed to 100%. Ran heaven --> 1936-ish Mhz clock... It got to 2000 sometimes but would not stay there long..
I was expecting a lot more of this card to be honest, it is like EVGA's top end Gtx 1080 at the moment with a super heavy power delivery system (14 + 3 phases,... So super overkill) and then I get 1936 frown.gif I know silicon lottery and that the cards are not binned but still

I also got my new 1080 classified yesterday.

Out of the box with no adjustments Heaven 4.0 (at 2560x1440) it is boosting to 1974.

a) If I turn the fan up to 100% temperature will go down to about 47c-49c and boost will then automatically stay at 1999 (2000 reported in Heaven).

b) If I then set the voltage to 100% the voltage will increase to 1.093v and it then boosts to 2012mhz-2015mhz at temps 47c-49c.

c) And also If I then add a power target of 30% and increase temp target to 92c the boost does not increase (since Heaven doesn't push the card to anywhere near the Classified's 320w power limit) -- Heaven 4.0 is only drawing an avg. 176w so increasing power limit will not help :-)

d) If I add 150 to the clock offset it will then boost to 2151mhz and stay there at 50c
while drawing about 10w more (power draw measured using HWiNFO64).

e) [Final Step] If reset the clock offset to 0 then use the voltage point/clock speed curve instead, to set boost offsets at each voltage point for a "finer tuned" overclock I am then able to get 2200 with a little trial and error. I haven't even sat and played around with the voltage curve for long yet -- the 2200 I got with only about 30 minutes "play around" time.

This was all done with the BIOS switch set to 'slave'.

Archang3l if you follow the same routine as I have above do you not get similar results? Are you in a hotter country? I am in the U.K where ambient temperatures are very mild.

I haven't got a chance to push my cards but what you say sounds just like how my cards run right out of the box, I was seeing the cards pop 2000 for a short periods too. I originally also was going to go with the classys but after reading a few reviews for both, the OC results were basically the same. Like you say tho one would hope with all those fancy power delivery bells and whistles you would get better results. mad.gif
