Looking for chair - neck issues

Thread Starter
Hello,

I have been looking at chairs for a long time and just cannot seem to find something I like. I have two bulging discs in my neck which complicates things even more.

Basic requirements:
-neck and/or headrest that I can lean back to take the weight of my head off my neck temporarily
-comfortable to sit in for hours
-solid lumbar support
-well built.

Some of these are no-brainers I know. Here are some that I have tried:
-steelcase leap2: somewhat comfortable. arms are over-adjustable and annoying (always accidentally moving them because they do not lock). Lumbar support was lacking for me. The adjustable option did not seem to even help with this. Did NOT feel like a chair that is worth 1000$+ price tag. Not even close. Did not try the headrest option because it looks like it pushes the head forward which will cause me problems.
-herman miller aeron: I use this at work. Better lumbar than the steelcase. Mesh is comfortable. Multiple headrest options available (have not tried). Decently adjustable. Dislike the hard plastic frame - makes upper back uncomfortable. Leaning toward this option (with one of the headrests) next.
-Eurotech Ergohuman 1/2: This one was comfortable BUT the headrest pushed my head forward and was not backward/forward adjustable. Unfortunately its most comfortable setting for me was pushed all the way down and rolled all the way forward, but the head then rests on plastic which sucks.
-Humanscale freedom: felt like this was too limiting and the headrest pushed by head forward.

I am a bit hesitant to get something with fabric or leather back because cats like to destroy leather/fabric. The leap at least had a hard plastic backing to prevent this - though at this point, I am starting to consider them again. I would love to hear from people with similar issues and what chair you recommend, but any recommendation is useful.

Thanks!

Have you looked at DXRacer chairs?
The DXRacer Formula series have a pretty good neck pillow.

I had problems with my neck which started to hurt after a few hours of work and with my old chair i had to stop working get up and do something else for a while.
Looked for a new chair for a very long time untill i heard about DXRacer, ended up with a DXRacer Formula and all my neck problems are gone now.

You can find more info and help here if you want.

I just bought a DXracer formula in blue/black. I am happy with the build quality and it helps force you into a correct posture.

I have a black and grey king series dxracer and since having it, I no longer have issues with my back, butt or neck which would get sore in my old $50 office chair.
Also Need for seat have the Maxnomic line which is also really good.

Not sure if they are made in the same factory in china but Akracing chairs looks very similar so you might find those easier then DXracer.

I was just looking for basically the same thing and I decided to build my own chair from an office chair bottom and a van seat from the junk yard. I don't think you are going to get much cheaper and more comfortable than that. I also got a memory foam neck pillow for it as well on amazon that is meant to attach to a car seat from amazon. Puts your neck in perfect posture.

So I tried one of my friends' DXracers. Was not a fan. First I thought it looked tacky. 2nd car chairs are uncomfortable to me and it did the same thing other real car chairs do and that is make my neck hurt. I did not like the lumbar support or the pillow he had.

I went to staples and sat in their Staples Hyken chair:

http://www.staples.com/Staples-Hyken-Technical-Mesh-Task-Chair-Black/product_990119

This thing was awesome - the headrest fit righ in the crook of my neck/lower head and I felt supported across the entirety of my back. It is probably one of the most comfortable chairs I have sat in (I even liked it better than their la-z-boy chairs). That said it did have a couple problems.
-neck rest could dig into shoulders. I just moved it up a tad to remedy.
-VERY cheap feeling. wobbly and felt like it was going to fall apart. this is really want prevented me from purchasing. this chair will fall apart.
-lumbar support seemed to disappear when leaning back. though not bad enough to make it too big a issue.

next I tried this:

http://www.staples.com/Staples-Professional-Series-1500TM-Mesh-Chair/product_1678457

It has a better lumbar support area (its own pice). The quality was superior. Lumbar did not disappear with leaning back. Only issue? no head/neckrest. At this point I left the place a little annoyed heh.

Sigh, my search continues. I may have to look into making my own neckrest somehow.

edit: interestingly, I am not really looking for low price chairs per se. I do not mind paying for quality, it is just really hard to find it where I can try it before buying.

I find myself in a similar boat. My current chair is this guy:

and it's not terrible I guess, but I would like something with a headrest. I like to kick back a bit when watching Netflix, or playing games with a controller, and it puts my neck in some awful position trying to hold up my head. I have to see a chiropractor like every 2 weeks to get my spine put back in place or I get headaches from pinched nervers. I've tried the chairs at Staples that OP mentioned and found the same problems. I also went over to IKEA and checked out their Markus chair which I keep hearing about in my chair search, and it was good, I guess only really better than my current one in the sense that it had a headrest. All around the net people keep saying to get an Aeron, but it's a little out of budget for me. I checked used ones locally and they are all about $500, and don't come with a headrest. Found one on Amazon, about $150 (the headrest I mean).

All of this is steering me to a DXRacer, I like the headrest, I like that it comes with pillows, it has a steel frame, it reclines, and I think they look pretty cool to boot. The F series is right about in my price range (I'm hoping for $250-350). Only problem is I can't sit in one! There is literally zero chair selection where I live, and it's awful.

TL;DR: I don't have quite the budget as OP, but I too, am looking for a nice chair with a headrest, and would appreciate any thoughts.

Not sure if it's due to me living in a city, but I frequently see office resellers on craigslist with nice pretty much brand new Herman Miller Aeron chairs for 250-300. There are two headrests that are designed for the chair specifically and are quite good. I got this one https://www.amazon.com/Headrest-Herman-Miller-Aeron-Chair/dp/B00MV8C8TA?tag=heavydutychairs-20

So If you can grab the chair for 250-300 you're out the door for 450ish.

The price may be high still for you but my last ergonomic chair from them lasted for 9 years. Definitely worth the investment since I spend 8-10 hours a day sitting down for work.
