980ti is running at ~1160mhz ( this frequency is based on anandtech review) so that means 6.5 teraflops,
1080 is running at ~1800mhz (probably more but i'll be generous with it biggrin.gif) so that means 9.2 teraflops.

if tom is correct, 1080 should be 41% faster than 980ti because 9.2/6.5= ~41% more teraflops

but if you look at performance chart, it's only 100/73= ~37% faster than 980ti.

conclusion, pascal has 2-4% lower performance/teraflops than maxwell. aka lower ipc. smile.gif but it doesn't really matter because it has huge frequency advantage. thumb.gif

I aim to upgrade to 1070 and a 1440p 144Hz monitor this summer

the next GPU upgrade either in 2018 or maybe even later if I can help it, still same monitor but running 2018 more demanding games at 60+ fps 1440P and current top games at 100Hz instead of 60 Hz

and then the next monitor upgrade (X years later) hopefully straight to a gaming version of a ~4K 27"-30" OLED HDR Gsync monitor redface.gif (assuming such a thing ever gets made rolleyes.gif)

These are my exact plans as well. Pretty sure I am going with the Dell Gaming S2716DG and either the EVGA ACX3 or Gigabyte G1 1070 when they drop. Not really finding much information on when those will be available yet though :/ may break down and buy the monitor in the next few days so I have it ready when I get the 1070.

I don't think comparing the card to another one with more shaders, ROPs, bus and all is a fair comparison honestly. Comparing it to the 980 for IPC would be a better comparison since those values are much more similar.

in that case, 9.2/5.1= 80% more teraflops for 100/60= 66% more performance. lol it's actually worse than 2-4% ipc loss.

comparison to 980ti is better because it's core count is pretty close to 1080 than 980's. and performance/teraflops is the best way to determine an architecture's performance efficiency. as long as the gpu isn't bottlenecked somewhere. it's not 100% correct but gives a good enough picture.

Haven't seen anything, or heard of anything from them from friends that are in computex. So yes, that is worrisome. However, they might have a plan we don't know of yet.

yeah but to be fair(ish) it was at ~65% more cost.

however calling out butthurt when simply comparing the two cards is . . . immature(?)
