Quote direct from the AMD earnings call:

AMD demonstrated its “Polaris” 10 and 11 next-generation GPUs, with Polaris 11 targeting the notebook market and “Polaris” 10 aimed at the mainstream desktop and high-end gaming notebook segment.

More here: http://ir.amd.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=74093&p=irol-eventDetails&EventId=5223086

What makes you think Polaris is anything but a GTX 960 competitor?

I thought it was 390x and lower replacement not that I know biggrin.gif

who knows at this point

Can they do at least one damn review with a properly OCed 980Ti vs OCed 1070? And while at it make it also 2xSLI since no one even bothered so far to test SLI for 10xx.

Even the 1080 doesn't stomp the 980Ti, so i don't think the tiny Polaris chips have a chance of being it's equal in most titles. $599 (if there is any) 1080's don't sound to bad if you need that performance.

If the 480 could match a 980Ti at that price tier i think there would of been a "leak" by now.. If Vega isn't a HBM2 monster then it looks like AMD will lose out on both our wallets, and Nvidia have a very high chance of really twisting the knife this time.

They only overclock the 980Ti in AMD reviews. tongue.gif Just pull up one of those slides. thumb.gif

According to Jayz2cents almost all 980Ti's can reach 1500MHz easily "and who doesn't overclock when buying a GPU in this tier".. Except in his 1080 review, then suddenly only special cards get up there, and most consumers aren't comfortable overclocking, and issues with temps, etc. tongue.gif

It is only a matter of time before Nvidia's artificial driver support period happens on GTX 900 series cards. The GTX 1070 might be in the same performance bracket as the Titan X and 980 Ti for now but with the new games coming the 1070 will have an advantage over those cards. It is a dirty way to force people to upgrade.

So, it's as predicted. AMD's Polaris won't compete with the 1070, but finding out it won't be competing with the 970 is disappointing to say the least.

No the moral is dont go to new hardware threads trying to justify your over priced purchase.

The bulk of GPU sales is in the mid level region, the 970/1070 is above that. Most spend at max about $200-$300 for a GPU so for amd and their current place in the market and business, going after the highest sales volume is more important then just releasing powerful cards.

The only reason 1070 has a reference card , or better said a starting price point , below 450-500 $ is because of competition. Put this card on 450$ and plenty will buy it. I mean..980 TI is 600+ $, why would you put an equivalent card on less than 500$ ?

nVidia has the high end market - since it has no competition. But for mid class they have to compete with Polaris ; hence the atractive price of 1070. In the process the sacrifice the 980 TI and Titan but ...who cares? Milk session is over for those cards anyway. Everyone knows that a GPU loses its value from day 1. But losing half of the value in the first year shows you how much you actually ooverpaid.
