spend my money - help me pick the best parts for gaming

Hi,

I have roughly $1000 to spend on a gaming rig. I'm going crazy with all the options and I want the best performance for my money (I could go a *little* over $1000 if I need to). Not interested in crossfire or heavy duty overclocking (modest OC is fun and safe), so likely no liquid cooling, either. Air should be OK.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

The video card would be an obvious place to start and since the GTX 1080 just came out there is a ton of second hand GTX 970 / 980 and 980 Ti cards cards flooding the market.
You can grab a second hand GTX 970 pretty cheap now that its being replaced.

You dont need an 850 watt PSU either not unless you are going to have 2-3 video cards.

OP wait a few more months. The all new AMD CPU line is planned for October release which will be 6 & 8 cores with hyperthreading probably competitively priced with that quad core(no hyperthread) i5 the above poster suggested, and all new GPU lines are around the corner.

Rather than complain about what I posted why not give him your suggestions instead.
