So yes, its normal they boost way more than the original boost.

Have you ever seen it go higher than that? That's why I am wondering about mine. I haven't found anyone who has said that theirs boosts to what mine does regularly. I am trying to figure out what determines the boost as it seems everyone's card is different.

I may have missed it earlier in this thread, so I am sorry if this is known already. I started having crashes this weekend after updating to the newest beta Afterburner. This was happening in games and benchmarks that previously had stability. Come to find out the issue had to do with Afterburner. Event logs never showed Afterburner as the culprit, but on a hunch I figured it was worth a shot to uninstall. This may have been an isolated issue with my machine, but wanted to give a heads up to anyone having an issue and not sure what it could be.

1x 8-pin 1070's and 1080's OC just as well as 8+6 pin 1070's and 1080's and nothing OC's any better than a Founders Edition. It's retarded.
Pascal OC's are 100% determined on the silicon lottery and just get whatever is cheapest is what I've gathered, every card has the same odds at the lottery so far.

I just want to point out some thing about power plugs ... there's basically zero practical advantage to having more 'pins' or power cables on any of these cards. The limiting factor to how much power these cards will pull is the TDP limiter (Power Limit) coded into the bios. If anyone manages to hack a higher limit in a custom bios (which I expect they will) everyone will be in the same boat in terms of available 'juice' for overvolting, it won't matter your pin count.

IOW some seem under the mistaken impression that there actually is a 'limit' to how much power will flow through an 8-pin cable, a 6 pin cable, etc. For all practical purposes in this application (powering a GPU, esp. a Pascal) there's really not.

Well ... I should say, there IS a limit, but it's enforced by the PSU itself ... it's called overcurrent protection ... but ... every decent power supply out there always has a good bit more headroom available on the 'rail' (and even more if you have a single 12V+ rail) that's powering the 8-pin cable(s) ...

Your PSU IOW will almost certainly allow way more than just 150W to flow through an 8-pin cable before it shuts off due to OCP. In fact I doubt a single one of you is using a PSU that wouldn't allow 200W through a single 8-pin connection, and everyone with a beefy single rail can pull WAY more than that.

Remember also the TDP on the 1070 card is only 180W, so even if you had a power limit at 125% that only works out to 225W ... exactly what an 8-pin+PCI-Ex (75W) slot is rated for.

And the wires on an 8-pin wouldn't start getting hot to a worrisome level until you hit at LEAST 250-300W flowing through it, most likely. There' a HUUUUUUGE safety margin built in to the 150W 'rating' on an 8-pin.

As such I don't recommend anyone 'hold out' for a 8+6 pin card unless you KNOW ... it's also allowing a higher Power Limit in it's bios ... and if you're enough of a tinkerer to swap bios'es, I wouldn't even worry about it period, just get the card w/the other features & price you want. NOBODY is going to be 'overclocking higher' just by virtue of an extra 6-pin on one of these cards ... but if your not a 'bios swapper' you may want to look for cards with a higher built-in power limit value regardless of pin count.

Canada Post's going on strike? right when order the cards, cmon!

Mine was shipped via Purolator, and despite some saying it's actually Canada Post, my tracking number doesn't work on CP's website and appears to be a legit Purolator number. Guess we'll know in a few days. Fingers crossed they don't get stuck in transit.

I notice quite a bit that people who can keep the card cooler (i.e. good case airflow) and a little silicon lottery luck, they usually get the higher boost out of the gate. It seems that 2.1GHz is the ceiling on both the 1070 and 1080. My 1080 G1 currently will boost all day to 1911+ depending on the title with the stock 'OC'.

If it's the same price as the AIBs coming and you don't mind the extra noise, I say go for it. I have a 1080 G1 and a 1070 FE and the FE has a weight to it that makes it feel really premium. People will complain about the plastic backplate, but the card really is something special to see and hold.

And how well does it overclock ? I know that all cards are different but do you have about the same chances of getting 2000 mhz boost clock as any other AIB versions ?

Obviously I can't answer for all owners as some get north of 2.1GHz and some only hit mid-to-high 1900s. So far I can deduce that with good case airflow/card temps, and sometimes an aggressive fan curve, you can pretty much hit that. I haven't decided to do much OC'ing yet as the gains past 1900 seem to bring diminishing returns. I don't benchmark, rather I play games, so I have no reason to really OC much if there's not a gain happening that makes it worthwhile.

Isn't that one of things determined by ASIC quality? Can't find link now, but i've read some test where higher ASIC led to higher boost by default.
