Is there a picture like this for an MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X cooler? I want to see how they've applied their thermal paste too.

Is this the one you are after?
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1070_Gaming_X/4.html

The problem with HDC(heatpipe direct contact) coolers is that as cores get smaller, less pipes touch.

Asus has a dual fan 1070 with just 2 pipes so they should both touch, but the cooler is not the greatest. It is pretty good under medium load, but seems to get fairly loud when the card maxes out.

I could try and set AB to not launch at all and run gpu-z and see what it says.
I got the new drivers yesterday and no difference in behavior.

2699 here, but thats before I was pushing the memory much, so not sure how much more I'd get now.
Plus I've disabled the onboard intel since then.

I can easily reproduce my "stuck" high clock issue. After lunching 3DMark menu, card starts running at 1800Mhz and it stays there. I tried that with/wihout running GPU-Z and AB.
I also tried to uninstall and install AB without any luck. To fix it without rebooting I'm using CRU's utility driver restart program which fixes the issue and put the card in 300Mhz speed.

Next I will run DDU and install latest drivers. Someone said it is good practice to uninstall drivers when swapping to a new GPU. I will post later with my findings.

Seriously contemplating switching from the Red to the Green team. My pair of 290x's work great, but I would like to move to a single card that has more power and I'm thinking about the 1070 which has a very nice price point/bang for the buck. AMD is really not releasing anything I must have so far.

I have been reading and looking around, but can't make up my mind on which to get. It will need to be one that EK makes a water block for since it will be added to my custom loop.

My case is a black and red ROG theme and want to stay with those colors. I do like the ASUS ROG version!!

Would like to hear some thoughts on this...

Thank you

I had been using CF 390's before I switched to the 1070, and I've been very pleased with the decision. You'll have plenty of options in terms of cards that fit a full-cover block, though it does seem that the only ASUS cards fitting the reference profile for the blocks are FE cards. I tend to favour EVGA myself, though I've only heard good things from happy FE owners. Personally, if planning to block the card I'd get something like an MSI Aero 1070, as it's around $400 USD and you won't need the cooler so the middling quality of the Aero's cooler wouldn't affect you.

Which version of AB and Nvidia drivers did you go with?
Drivers im on is 372.70 and AB 3.2.0b4
Edit: I uninstalled all the MSI stuff, afterburner and DDU.
On latest and nvidia and just gpuz is confirming clock is idling at 215MHz, 0% fan.
Now not sure which AB to put in in case thats the trigger.
AB 3.2.0b4 back in and looks fine. Even able to get fan down to 0% in custom profiles as before it wouldnt let me go under 25% or so, even with fan curve at 0.
Edit2: As fun as lower idle clocks are, my pc keeps crashing with the checkerboard artifacts after about 1 minute of applying, whereas before it was fine. I think this is a voltage issue now. If I lock voltage then clocks shoot up again.
Edit3: What a horror. Im pretty much instalocking whenever I load up one of my previous profiles. Coreclock +180 is still fine since that doesn't kick in until boost comes on, which handles voltage as well.
But memory clock sadly is independent of that from what I see. +400 seems fine, but I have been using +700 no problem all week, and even ran successful 3dmark benches at +800, some with +825.
With voltage locked at minimum which looks like 800mV, I can sit on desktop at +700, but now clocks at 1771 as opposed to 1550 or so as before, 50º.

Wow that Palits heatpipes are huge. Their cooler looks a lot like the aftermarket heatsinks you can buy (Prolimatek MK-26 and Raijintek Morpheus). No wonder it performs so well.

Did some of you tried undervolting ? From my side as i was getting a wall at 2100mhz - 1.093v i have spend some time playing with the curv and lock. I can be stable at 2050mhz and only .993v (point set at 2075).
Man, i shouldnt have redone all my stuff. Dropping into 2d mode I guess is killing me.
Also locking voltage I thought would be a minimum setting but it could go up, nope.
So now I have to lock it at 1.093 or so just so this doesn't crash.
