Its the same thing they're doing with food. Make a modification of one gene and sell those seeds double the price. And if you make any significant income from selling the food, you're charged royalty fees.

Last I checked, I didn't need a damn patent license to grow food and flowers.

Yeah, I don't buy the whole genetic patent thing.

Even if you create the entire genome yourself and not just a few mods, it's still life. How can you patent life.

When the first genetically engineered humans pop up, can the company sue them if they breed?

It's funny, I think within the next 50-100 years, slavery will come back. It's not going to be with whips or chains, it will be with money and the court system, with the erosion of privacy, etc.

I don't know what is sadder: lawmakers dragging their feet to ensure legal rights for people, or that there are people in this world that want to take away liberty just to make money... or for kicks.

The same mentality that created slave/ plantation owners still exists... just in other areas. My theory: a lot of sports team owners would be in heaven in a slavery South. Business leaders too, who see employees as expensive robots.

I can't be the only one thinking part of the beauty of living things is that they don't last forever. I feel the sentiment loses its value otherwise, and I doubt any woman is excited to receive plastic flowers or a flower that doesn't wilt.

Monsanto, get to work on the human genome. You're already a feared and hated company, you guys might as well figure out a way to genetically engineer a human who can live over 120 biggrin.gif
