Trying to decide on a new gaming laptop... - Page 2

Cheers for the help! As usual my greed for computing power and eye candy is tempting me towards an Asus G752. Ups the budget by quite a bit, but then I can get 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and a 980M.

I thought it was longer than that, but waiting for Pascal is the thing to do regardless.

I've used a MSI GS70 Stealth Pro (970m) for almost two years now and love it. The build quality and general design aesthetic of the chassis is gorgeous. The keyboard is almost perfect for frequent, high speed typing, the screen is fantastic (for a TN) ... and the 970m still plays everything just fine ...

I was thinking about upgrading when Pascal comes out on the laptop market but more and more, I'm thinking of just riding my GS70 for another year at least ...

Witcher 3, probably the heaviest performance hit game I currently play ... maintains a constant 55 to 60FPS on "HIGH" settings in general with "ULTRA" selected for detail level and texture quality also set to Ultra ...

Here is a little vid I did showing temps and FPS after playing for a couple hours in a 23C room..

...

...

But MSI's in general are very well put together machines; Asus are also built very well and I might have ended up with one of them but just couldn't stomach the dark red LED backlight on the keyboard keys, which just isn't a very bright option. Even worse, when not using the LED backlighting on the Asus laptops, one has to deal with dark red type on the keys themselves ... as a constant typer, I found the lettering hard to see on the Asus keys whether lit or not.

Among the MSI's the 17" Stealth Pro is my favorite because of how light it is. It does produce a noticeable amount of fan "hiss" when maxxed but not so much that it bothers me and especially since I always use headphones.

I also owned a 970m version of the full sized MSI GT72 Dominator for a few weeks (a temporary purchase) and to be honest, it a much more efficient/silent option than is the GS70 Stealth, but it also weighs about 9lbs which was a deal killer for me. The Dominator runs much cooler than the Stealth, though max temps more in the range of 66 to 70C versus the Stealth's 77 to 84C load temps.

That said, I've never had any throttling issues ... even with a +135 overclock on the 970m ... as you can see above in the Witcher vid ...

Best of luck
joel
