Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 R5 and AMD FX-9590 Freezing Issue

Thread Starter
Ok...... I have been having issues since day 1 with my built computer. I though initially it was the mother board, replaced it with no fix. Then thought maybe it was video card, replaced it and again no fix. Then thought maybe it was my PSU but I put a buddies 1200W PSU on my system and it too didn't fix my freezing issue. At this point I was fed up and took it in to be analyzed and fixed, if possible. They ran all their tests and found the issue was in my CPU but couldn't fix it. I was only running between 40-55C with a load, so I didn't think It was my CPU.

Right before I went to send it in for warranty I found a thread about the FX 9590 and other people having same issues. I turned the turbo boost mode off and everything seemed to work great! Well, at least I could play a game for longer than 1 minute without a crash. However, the damn thing still crashes on me. Sometimes I can play for hours with no issues and sometimes it lasts 5 minutes before my computer completely crashes and have to hard restart my computer. It only happens when I play games and put a load on the CPU.

I went back to the threads and found multiple more fixes people were saying they did to fix their exact same problem. I pretty much have everything disabled in the advanced CPU core features and STILL freeze up after game-play. I even dropped 2 of the 8 cores and only running with 6 and still freeze. I have hit a brick wall on things I can do or do I need to get a better, more reliable CPU that is compatible with my system? Below is a list of my current specs. PLEASE HELP!!

That sounds familiar. My 9590 worked perfectly at first. Dropped it in and it ran fine, then OCed it to 5 ghz and it stress tested just fine. But over time it began to slowly fail. First it would not complete a stress test with the black screen, then it woud black out as soon as I would start a stress test. When it started to black out while gaming I pulled it and put the trusty 8350 back in.

Yes, RMA it and replace it with an 8370 and then overclock it for easy reliable performance. It is hard to believe you are cooling it with only an H60.

If you are trying to run that corsair ram at xmp profiles that could be a problem.
I'd be curious to know what batch number that chip is and what vid values it returns. H-60 shouldn't be able cool it past 4.6 or so if it's an early one.

Playing with my board (Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 R4) for the last couple of weeks I've noticed the following

I put G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB DDR3 2133 F3-2133C10D-16GXM and loaded XMP profile on a R4 board and it would not work. I was going to send the memory back but found that if I upped the FSB and lowered the memory multiplier the ram would run. I actually got it up to 2240mhz and FSB @ 240 I could get it higher but had to back down some because of lockup every few days. You might try changing the memory multiplier.

On the bench if I just ran Prime95 the motherboard heat sinks would get really hot (FX-6300 6 core) I put a fan on them. This CPU was only rated at 95watts. Your running 220w. I wonder if it's possible your just overheating. I'm going to pull the motherboard heat sinks that are removable and put good compound on them. They need air flowing over them.

I found a bug in the most recent revision of BIOS for my board (F3) and had to down grade to F2, you might try that if it's possible for your revision.

I have a Corsair H55 cooler and had to put push/pull fans, I opted for Noctua NF-F12 iPPC 3000 PWM to keep up under load and (OC) (yes overkill but they slow down when not under load). I did get a bad fan that caused my computer not to boot and/or lockup.

Sounds like you got the operating system installed, wonder why it would start locking up after that? Driver issue? (I've seen Windows 10 upgrade driver and machine would fail)

You've probably already tried all these things... Good Luck

I pulled the heat sinks on my board and found this interesting on the power IC's (Mosfets?) Only about 2/3 of the tape was actually making good contact with chips. I should have used a strait edge to see if the heat sink was flat. But took off tape and applied heat sink compound. I can see this causing problems with higher powered CPU's.

Yes that was what I saw with my warped UD3 R3 and I got it RMAd.

The UD3 is marginal when you are talking a 9590. Most people who run them problem free have Sabertooth R2's or Crosshair 5 Forumla Z's. As stated above your cooler would be weak with a two core 65 watt Athlon let alone a 220 eight core monster. You would be best of with an 8370E and a NH-D15. That way your board would get some residual air across the heatsinks from the two fans which under hang the heatsink.
