Some kind of acid coming out of mice?

Thread Starter
Case 1: Long time ago when my MX510 stopped working, I put it in a box and when I took it out a few years later, it was covered in some sticky brownish acid-like substance. Reminded me of acid that comes out of the old batteries. I threw it out.

Case 2: A year ago I was using cheap Genius mouse and after some time mouse wheel started to get sticky, more and more every day. The rubber was melting until it melted of completely. I opened the mouse, and nothing weird except for parts of melted rubber. So I took it apart and cleaned the plastic with soap. Never used it after.

Now I noticed the same stickiness on Zowie AM CL and it seems to be coming from the cracks on the sides of mouse wheel. Anyone knows what is going on?

There's a gremlin living in your attic. When you go to sleep, it comes down to lick your mice.

That gremlin is me devilsmiley.gif

Capacitors leak and rubber coatings outgas.
Happened to my X7 mouse a while ago. Some coating materials do that after time, you can't fix it.

Neither the zowie mouse or logitech mouse have big electrolitic capacitors, smd small ones at best.

Sounds like mice don't take well to your local climate or something leaking.

Phthalates

They're plastic softeners, which have been found to have health risks. They're in a lot of plastic products. In porous plastics like mouse wheels they can kind of leak out.

Eeehhh.. Reminds me of the prevention campaigns showing major risks for babies and fertility in Switzerland and the EU.

So you're sur plastic used in mice contains phtalates?

Pretty often in rubber wheels. Not so often in coating, but could be there nevertheless.
