Most professional reviewers don't get enough time with the parts, don't have access to multiple samples, or don't know what they are doing.

On the other hand what most of OCN says is often not perfectly relevant to my uses either, because the typical standard of stability falls far short of my own.

which is why I wait for new x99 mb and 6950x tests

it doesn't hurt to get an idea of the chip but wait for the verdict while the market determines price (but it seems intel determines price)

How much stability do you really need for a CPU (not talking about you personally but for the average PC user)? I know my OC won't stand up to the ridiculous "24hrs Prime" standard but I don't give a flip. It never crashes in my daily use so its fine for my purposes. Stability is such an overrated concept around here for normal desktop PC usage. Sure, if you are doing CPU-intensive things that require no possibility of crashing then I can understand, but most people just play games or do some video encoding here and there. Ultimate stability is not necessary for that...

Temps.

Temps seem to be the main problem with the 6850k+ just like the 5930k+. They're just so hot that even with premium cooling solutions you often dial them back just due to heat before you actually hit their 24/7 overclock ceiling.

I can run my 5930k at 4.5ghz 24/hr prime stable and everything, possibly higher. I keep it at 4.375 because even with a Heatkiller 4.0 block, 3/4" tubing and MPC-655 pump it will insta-spike by more than 30c under load running 4.5, and I can't stand watching my temps jump like that. Looks like Broadwell-E is even hotter.


Sooo.... Unless you're going phase change for your Broadwell-E platform OC stability probably isn't even going to be your primary issue with the chip....

If someone knows they don't need the best stability possible and are both informed of and accepting of the possible negative consequences of this, that's one thing. However, I don't like some vague degree of less than unconditional stability being used as a metric, because it's far too variable and takes too many liberties with what people may be using the part for.

When I say something is stable, I mean it will run anything you can find to run on it, for as long as you care to do so. What someone else considers stable, on the exact same part (not just same model, but the same sample) could be anywhere from that clock speed to ~10% higher, depending on the conditions and caveats applied.

I OC CPUs to do CPU intensive things that stock parts cannot do, or cannot do in acceptable periods of time, without having to cough up significantly more cash to get a part with the same out of box performance (which often doesn't even exist within a single SKU). Crashes are annoying and silent corruption of data, which is often more common, is utterly unacceptable.

Anyway, the crux of my argument is that personal OCing mileage will vary more the less defined and less strenuous the testing gets. A part that is gaming stable at 4.6GHz in one person's hands may only be stable at 4.4GHz in someone else's games, or may be able to run at 4.7 in another's. If I say its unconditionally stable at 4.3GHz, no one will get less out of it, in anything, unless there is a problem with some other hardware. It's not that reviewer's OCs are useless--they definitely provide a ballpark, especially if they document everything well--it's that they are inherently vague if they place conditions that will not always be met on the clocks they report.

I can imagine having dynamic clocks for certain high load programs.(TB3.0 that lowers clock for AVX workload.)
