Be it power or voltage, the Pascal cores are locked down harder than Fort Knox and overclocking above the 2100MHz mark will take some serious modifications and / or epic sized balls by a board partner who is willing to risk resulting RMA's.

Personally, I think this is a byproduct of the finer manufacturing process being used on Pascal and (soon) Polaris. The margin of error is now excessively small so safeguards are being put in place to the detriment of overclockers.

Card overclocks just fine actually. People expected way too much. Some people were expecting 2500mhz lmao Really? I mean you can throw as much custom bios or power connectors or 20 phase vrm as you want but you won't gain 500mhz, never was nor never will be.

Yea, sounds like the Maxwell cards seems to be the last era for great OCing.

If they clocked it as fast as it can goes, then they have to increase core count and increase IPC to make up for 16nm node's unfriendliness to the OC margin that used to be taken for granted on older nodes.

is it true Pascal has same IPC as Maxwell?

Would explain why they clocked it as high as it goes, would have been more impressive with better IPC per core like they did for Maxwell vs Kepler.

Not even Asus engineers can find solution how to get past that 1.25v limit. frown.gif

That i what they said about the baseclock being locked on non-k Skylake processors too. But AS Rock releases bios for all boards with unlocked base clock and suddenly the same or next day ASUS says hey look we have this too. I have a feeling they simply say that but are just bending to the wishers of the Intel and Nvidia.

So...I'm still not sure if we need additional power plug to the card then....AT ALL....

Thought having one plug would be a deal breaker in power draw limit, resulting in lowered clock on the card at heavy load...

It's not a planar process anymore, finfets don't typically scale that well with additional voltage.
