It wasn't an official guide from Evga, but from their in-house Overclockers.
And if you spent your time reading the comments, you'll realize that they are struggling to get past 1.25V too.
And this is with a completely hacked up PCB, that doesn't have any limit of the anemic reference PCB.
It is proven. They didn't tell other to do it.
Every gen, select XOCers do this mod on reference cards because they don't want to wait 3 months for the proper OC cards. The guide is from one such Overclocker, to help others.
And there's no way they could have known that it wouldn't work, without actually doing the mod.
