Case Labs S8 build - Page 5

*Major build update*

Finally I got time and money to update my build. Hardware wise I am swithching from 6 core 6850k to 10 core - i9 7900x, changing my SLI 1080 for a single 1080ti and switching from samsung 950 to samsung 960 pro. The MB will be ASUS TUF X299 MARK 1. The video cards will be cooled by kryographics Pascal for GTX 1080 Ti + Back plate for kryographics Pascal GTX 1080 Ti w/ active XCS + VISION connection terminal, the CPU will be cooled by cuplex kryos NEXT with VISION for 2066.

Also I will have to redo the tubing runs in the build and rethink the airflow in the case, as it was getting pretty hot with the current air flow settings.

It would be more of a refresh and reconsideration of mistakes, made in previous build.

Also I had an Idea in mind to make one loop for both VGA and CPU, to reduce the temperatures but probably I would stay with 2 loops as it would be real pain in the a** to redo all the tubing runs once again.

I will post photos soon and then run through benchmarks and compare it with my previous system.

I've decided to go with ASUS ROG APEX x299 board, other them TUF MARK1. Today I am going to gt the board and start putting everything together in the evening.

Also I Got a package form Aquacomputer yesterday and I've put GPU water-block and and back-plate together.

Going to continue soon!

Got time yesterday to put together the CPU loop. The RVI Apex is an amazing board. Despite several inconveniences the assembling process went pretty smooth.
Several issues on Apex:
1)The VRM fan mounting system is not clear. I tried to attach the fan by the normal screws, but it is impossible (please see 2nd photo) and the solution I found was to attach it using double-sided duct tape.
2) Apex is an E-ATX form factor board. But the board it self is not rectangle-shaped as I got used to. It has some small trenches, through all the board, the purpose of wich was not clear to me. The most inconvenient are the sata ports placed at ~30 degrees.
3) The board has only 4 memory slots instead of 8 on the other models (this is widely known an is not an issue as it is an overclocking board feature).

Today I am going to get two PCI-e SSD's and create an m.2 RAID 0 array using dimm.2 expansion boards.
Then Ill continue with GPU loop.

That will be tricky I'm sure. To get full throughput, you'll need to put them both on the CPU_DIMM.2 slot which will give each SSD its own PCIe 3.0 x4 connection. And that's only with a 44 lane CPU ... which you obviously have.

If you put them in the PCH_DIMM.2 slot, you're ultimately limited to the speed of the DMI between the PCH and the CPU ... which is capped at the equivalent of one PCIe 3.0 x4. In that case, you'd be capped at the speed of one PCIe SSD.

I'll be curious to see how it works out. I'm interested to know if you can boot a RAID 0 in the CPU_DIMM.2 slot without the VROC key. And even with the VROC key, I think the fine people at Intel have limited the functionality to Intel SSD's only.

I'm more confident that you could boot a RAID 0 from the PCH_DIMM.2 slot but then you'd be limiting your bandwidth and would be losing the gain you're expecting from the RAID 0.

Like I said ... tricky.
