I have a bit of coil whine on my EVGA SC cards. You can hear it here. About 18 seconds in I turn off my pumps/fans and that's all the cards. Then they stop because the benchmark finishes at like 23 seconds.

Got a new MSI 1080 8G Gaming X replacement and I can only hear some slight electric noise with my face near the card, with the case closed it's silent !

Was worth the trouble because playing with what sounded like an angry cicada was a headache..

This shouldn't be a thing in 2016 with hardware that cost hundreds.

Hello,
I just bought 2x EVGA GTX 1080 superclocked, and I have the same problem.

As soon as my card load, coil whine is kinda loud. If I set in game graphic settings to low, and I set low resolution, coil whine is gone.

Before this, I used 2x gtX 980 Gigabyte reference model, so I decided to re test the same game with 2x gtx 980 ,and coil whine is much less, can barely hear it.

Will EVGA RMA graphic cards, if I removed stock cooler? (was thinking to install EK water block on it, but I will rather RMA it if possible)

I have found a grand total of ONE case where I hear coil whine from my MSI 1080 Gaming X.

Running the Valley benchmark software, I can hear coil whine in the menu splash screen before you start the 3D rendering. Once it starts rendering things in 3D there is no coil whine, but for that brief moment when the 2D splash screen is displaying I can hear coil whine.

Other than that, I hear nothing from the card.

My Gainward Phoenix GTX 1080 has whine, not as noticable as my previous EVGA SC, but the EMI interferes with the ASUS ST soundcard in my system causing it to make the sound quality crappy when using the microphone. It's especially noticeable in GPU heavy games like DOOM. Considering sending it back.

Just another point of reference:

I received a PNY 1080 FE a few days ago, and I have had no coil whine whatsoever. My previous card, a reference Powercolor 290X, never had whine during actual games, but would occasionally whine on loading screens, menus, etc. The 1080 does not whine here either. No issues with funny fan noises either. I've had some cards with bad coil whine in the past, but this one is as close to perfect as I've ever experienced.

I'm a bit late but capping FPS helps significantly in most cases. Mine was whining very hard (same card) when I first got it but I've managed to bring it down quite a lot.

I hammered it with 24/7 stress testing OC'd to the max for the first day, to my own surprise it helped a bit.
Capped FPS to my monitor's refresh rate at 60Hz which also helped a lot in some games.
Now that I've moved and have obviously changed power outlets I've noticed another improvement with the coil whine.
I'm running default settings with a more aggressive fan profile for the most part since the card breaks 2GHz under stock settings.

The card whines maybe 15% of what it did, when I first got my card it was horrible. The only reason I didn't RMA it is because I didn't want to go another month with my backup card, a GTX 460 on a 3440x1440 monitor. lachen.gif

I went through 6 980 Tis (MSI, EVGA SC, EVGA Classified) and none had cool whine. I also have my current classifieds on water.

This guy has now added a comment saying it was caused by his Corsair PSU. I guess it can be hard to know what the culprit is. A PSU can work well with some graphics cards but not others.
