hi guys

i found a used r9 290x for 160$ being sold locally so there wont be any extra shipping prices or other costs

is it worth the price the r9 290x is so old its from 2013

and i have never bought a used gpu before

is it safe to buy a used gpu
is there anything that i can check to see if its working fine
should i or shouldnt i buy it ?

Is it a reference or non reference 290X?

Was it used for bitcoin mining for the last 2 1/2 years 24/7 ?

The 290x is still a very capable card:

$160 seems like a steal to be honest. But I'm not sure about second hand market prices so it may be par for the course.

well 160$ is a good price, but remember Polaris 11 and Polaris 10 come out soon. It may be worth waiting if you have a higher budget than 160$.

If you are absolutely limited to 160$ then it's a good price if the card works flawlessly.

In about 11 hours 15 minute AMD has a presentation. You could wait for that and see what they have to offer there.

My prediction is that a slightly better product will be announced for 200-250$. Brand new, new tech. it's up to you.

I always urge people to wait if they don't need a GPU right now ! thumb.gif

you have to ask the owner. Bitcoin mining means it has been used heavily the last couple of years at full load.

It's a gamble on your end. I probably wouldn't buy it. Simply because new cards come soon and they will be better in every regard and we expect them to be rather cheap. They won't be 160$ for 290X levels of performance cheap, but they will offer a great price/performance ratio.

no problem. Make sure to check the news segment of OCN and other sites tomorrow to see what AMD has to offer with Polaris. Maybe you are in for a surprise and can get a brand new card for like 200$ thumb.gif

What are you playing that you're having issue with the 6970? I'm running a 6950 as a temp for the last month and it's working fine overclocked at 1600x900 and 1080p. I would really just try and wait the month or 2 for the 480.
