If you look at Nvidia and AMD discussions its always about the tier you find GP104. Of course there are people wanting $200 cards as well, but the most vocal ones and what interest most gamers is 1070 type of cards.
People that have a desktop with R7 360 or GTX 960 are mostly people that bought their desktop prebuilt, most from OEMs. Dell, MSI etc. And these are not the typical enthusiasts that lurks forums and participate in discussions and rumors and speculations.
Which is why reading discussions and forums seems to give you the idea that "AMD cant win", because it seems they dont have anything to offer for enthusiasts yet. Which is sad

Nvidia doesn't have anything for enthusiasts either. The 1080 is a new generation midrange card sold as a high end one.

it would be something like a 390 in performance, $400 price for both air and water option.

It seem's Powercolor and XFX both think that Polaris could benefit from water cooling, Maybe they OC very well under water? They would have to if Mark thinks they could get 1070 price for it.

I consider myself an enthusiast. At least, I have the budget for a high-end card this cycle. I do not want to get a 1080 when a Ti is just around the corner to counter Vega. I would feel so screwed over, like a 780 owner.

For GTX 980 and GTX 970 owners, which is what most people bought from Maxwell, Pascal offer a huge upgrade. Neither 1070 nor 1080 was meant to replace GTX 980Ti.
So sorry, Nvidia absolutely have a lot to offer today. In the gamer market that accounts for most of the sales

Because... it IS the high-end one right now.

At this point in time it's the king of the pile.

Yeah? And how'd that work out for Hawaii?

1080 will be relevant for about 2 or 3 months until 1080Ti and Vega.

The 1080 and 1070 are basically the same chips as Maxwell with an updated async solution which is still inferior to AMD's. The node shrink allowed a higher clock speed, which is where the boost in performance we see comes from.

nVidia are geniuses of marketing and making everyone think AMD sucks. Not only that, they're masters of making everyone believe their own cards do not suck. Look at the founders edition... That people fell for that.. Ugh...

People that think only in the 'right now' are short-sighted and inevitably make wrong decisions. Patience is a virtue.

If they sell this at $249 with the performance 10-20% greater than a 390X, then it would destroy the 1070 in value, it wouldn't even be close. It all depends on price.

I think it's a "can't or won't" situation with AMD.

The "can't" scenario is what troubles some people about AMD, as a whole.

They're telling people Polaris is a "won't" chip - "we don't WANT to compete on the high end with nVidia."

In reality, maybe they just can't.

Pretty optimistic on a Ti within 3 months.

End of year if we're lucky.

Problem is polaris is late.
That leak will be amazing 2 month ago.
Sub 300USD card faster than GTX980 and 110-120w TDP.GTX 980 at 500USD will look like bad joke.No sign of Pascal yet.

But now we have 400USD 1070 and it is 20-30% faster than GTX980.
So yeah they are late
