6+1 power should be alright for overclocking. I really think the single 6-pin thing is overblown. That connector is actually good for over 300 W.

So I mayyyyy... just maybe might jump ship from Nvidia... if I can get my 970 back fixed from Asus I may just end up selling it...

I can nearly break even with a sold 970 and either a 480 or pay a little more for a 480x.. I like the form factor and love the power draw rumors. I'm really excited to see benchmarks of this new card coming supposedly Friday??? Looks like the cooler can be properly lapped and with some good protected, CLU could be applied.

Performance of the 480 should be right around 980. it is an upgrade, but I totally understand that it might not be *enough* of an upgrade for some people. I myself have a 290, and even though it's only about a 10-20% performance increase, I'm getting it for the heat/power/sound aspect. My 290 is a reference and it's starting to show its age.

It is a tough choice. If they were also coming out with a 490 and 490x based around this price/performance ratio the choice would be simple. For those with a decently powerful last generation card the 480 isn't much of an upgrade (if it's around a 980) but it's still a hell of a bargain.

Well here's the deal...

If performance is around a 980 that would mean its about 10-20% faster than my stock 970... which after my 970 is overclocked its 5-10% slower... I'm sure these new 480-480x will overclock quite well... so I would imagine after overclock I'll be getting a good 10-20% performance over my current overclocked 970. Now, the big if will be temperatures and power consumption. All the rumors indicate I should be able to squeeze out 10-20% more performance on an overclocked 480 vs a 980 and still draw like <150w... heck yea I'll jump on that.

the way I see it, I can either
  • Sell my watercooled 290 for $180 to $220 and upgrade to RX 480 for free

or if the value of 290's tank,
  • buy a dirt-cheap 290 and live happily ever after

my bedroom already gets pretty hot with a single 290. How much do you spend on air conditioning?
