The 970 is a card with 3.5GB effective memory for christ sake, a 480 with 8GB VRAM and performance on par with a Fury for $229 is most definitely an upgrade with a price so low you could make a profit by selling your old card. If you are quick tongue.gif

Yeah it would be a nice upgrade if they can offer up Fury performance levels. I am being conservative and thinking it comes in slightly above the R9 390X and below Fury, but we have to wait for some concrete numbers.

I'm with you there. One of my 290Xs died and rather than replace it I'll probably just buy two of these and wait for the big cards to get here. Still waiting for some solid benchmarks but it's going to be hard to say no for ~$400.

Because the 1080 is clearly a 70% faster than the 980, and the 1070 seems to do the same.
yeah in certain conditions aka gameworks titles cause on neutral games and even so on dx12 its a disaster

Actually, the natural upgrade track here would be for Tonga / Antigua owners to upgrade rather than draw the folks who paid $300+ for their GPUs down into a lower price bracket.

The LAST thing AMD wants for owners who are willing to spend more money on a GPU to buy a lower-priced version. That would be horrible from a business perspective.

The only thing that bothers me is the way AMD completely disregards the enthusiast segment.
$200 is good. Gaming for everyone, and I appreciate that.
But they are like "This gpu is good enough for you. We don't even care about high end, 4K gaming, all that crap".

I am inclined to agree. The people with 970/390's aren't looking to do a side-grade and are more likely waiting to see the big guns.

I must say, the card is quite sexy, and a reference design at that. It looks to be smaller than the Fury.

I think one of AMD's blunders regarding card releases was that they showed all their cards in one launch. Nvidia, being the business geniuses they are only showed what was necessary. AMD seems to be going the same route here.
