R9 390 ($299):- 5.1TFLOPS & 384GB/s = R9 290X
R9 390X ($369):- 5.9TFLOPS & 384GB/s = GTX980 ($399)

RX 480X ($199):- (2304SP @ 1266MHz) :- 5.8TFLOPS & 256GB/s

Performance wise its probably slightly slower than the R9 390 and between the 970 and 980 (Closer to the 970).

Why slightly slower then 390? IPC has improved so TFLOPS do not compare. Also memory compression form GCN 1.2 and now GCN 4.

the Radeon™ RX 480 will deliver the world’s most affordable solution for premium PC VR experiences, delivering VR capability common in $500 GPUs.

Is there a difference in gaming versus VR where GPUs are concerned?  Could we be getting set up for disappointment assuming this statement also means comparable gaming performance to a $500 GPU, since they don't say that?

How do you figure a 5.8TFLOPS brand spanking new uArch will get less perf than a 5.1TFLOPS uArch from 2013?

If you're reading into the memory bandwidth, don't. Tonga's memory compression allowed it to have a 70% better score in a memory bandwidth bound test despite having 45% lower bandwidth.
Hawaii doesn't have memory compression tech, so it doesn't benefit from this.

What a strange conclusion given how you've presented the numbers (which is correct).

What is this 970-performance assumption based on?

So you have better tessellation and better compression from GCN 1.2. We still do not have details of GCN 4 and all the improvements but are are much bigger then 1.1 to 1.2.
