I'd be surprised if next generation's consoles or 'steam boxes' achieve 1/4 the power that was crammed in the quantum.

It was a concept that could only be built with existing high power components ie PC. The graphical power by the time of next consoles will be as close as demonstrated.

Who is going to pay premium for the better specked APU? Sony or Xbox? You do know the $120 dollar constraint is for current contracts.

Who else can bring an APU that developed to the next console and underbid AMD?

Nvidia locked AMD in the console basement to survive on crumbs. AMD have gone all "Mc Guyver" with benefits to their PC hardware.

If you think that an APU will be as powerful as a dual fury (the one demonstrated, tech sites got their hands on single fury versions) and 4790, you need a reality check. That would require a 'quantum leap' tongue.gif of performance in APUs of ~300-400%. Unheard of in consoles... or anything honestly.

Edit: Oh... and at $120 per unit... even more delusional.

and how do you know that its going to be only an apu? for all we know they might actually use an apu and a dedicated gpu

I addressed his 'APU' point.

The second point still stands whether or not the first point is applicable in your case. Besides at that point it's not a 'console'... it's an HTPC. I don't really like calling today's 'consoles' consoles, they're basically mass produced HTPCs with custom SoC design. Consoles used to be very different from PCs, these days there's very little difference aside from coding and architecture utilization.

Anyways... back to the point. You're not going to see a semi-custom SoC w/ dual fury and 4970 performance until 'real' PCs are well beyond that performance point and even longer for a $120 per unit price.

Waw, this "card" will give my "card" (980) some well deserved spanking. It matters to me, because i bought my card in April (548 $) last year, and I always had regrets about it. I know i deserve a slap too, but I had it  already, when I bought this overpriced thing. Other "green card" I had, was a 590, but that one seemed like a good housekeeper, had some value, got old beautifully, died peacefully (she was too HOT:). It is time to come back home to my reds. I remember those days when struggling between S3 Virge and S3 Savage, and having my first ATI in my PC. What a breath of fresh air it was. I also remember that AMD had to put something like "Pentium rated" :))) so the people not to be confused :D.

Is it really possible to see anything from Vega in October? I kept on hearing this rumor!

I will wait `till next year for Vega, even tough I wished something a bit better from them this year. Meanwhile, I will just see how much value this 980 will have, and if I can sell it reasonably, and not to add more than 100$, I will buy the 480 (8 gig), just to support the company for this year, in the little way I can.

so far we have heard literally everything regarding the next consoles..

having the ability to change the components
supporting freesync/adaptive sync along with new tvs that will support it
being the first dual gpu consoles able to hit 4k (i hope this is true so we can see some nice benefits for the cf/sli systems)
having a more pc like memory module (tho since 480 came and has full opencl 2.0 support along with shared memory i guess this is fud)

literally we are just grinding down rumors for nothing..
